Every 2025 NBA Playoff and Finals Scorebug Ranked: ESPN, TNT, and How They Changed Each Round

ColorWay Sports·

One of the things the NBA actually does well with its playoff presentation is changing the scorebug as the rounds progress. The scorebug gets a little more premium with each round, and by the Finals, it's a completely different look from the first round. We went through every version from the 2025 NBA Playoffs and ranked them.

ESPN First Round Scorebug

ESPN first round scorebug, 2025

This scorebug does the job. You look at it and you know it's the playoffs. It gives you a full description with "WEST 1st ROUND GAME 1" along the bottom bar, and the Playoffs logo with Google sponsorship is right there. The team colors are integrated, the seed numbers are displayed. It's clean and functional. Nothing flashy, but it tells you everything you need to know, and it looks like a playoff scorebug. That's all we're asking for.

Grade: A-

ESPN Western Conference Finals Scorebug

ESPN Western Conference Finals scorebug, 2025

This is incredible. The full "WESTERN CONFERENCE FINALS" logo across the bottom bar with the game number. That's exactly what it should be. The script is right. We love the silver treatment on the Conference Finals bug because it's just before the gold, which is the Finals. It builds anticipation. You see the silver and you know the next step is gold. ESPN nailed this one.

This is also exactly what the on-court branding should be doing. If the scorebug can say "Western Conference Finals," the court should too.

Grade: A

TNT Playoffs Scorebug

TNT Playoffs scorebug, 2025

TNT had their own playoff scorebug, and it's cleaner than their Conference Finals version. The "Playoffs Presented by Google" branding sits across the top, the series lead is displayed on the right, and the overall layout is more readable. It's not bad. It does the job and it doesn't feel as cramped as the ECF version. But it still doesn't look elite for the playoffs. It lacks that premium feel that ESPN's scorebugs have.

Grade: C+

TNT Eastern Conference Finals Scorebug

TNT NBA Eastern Conference Finals scorebug 2025 Indiana Pacers New York Knicks AT&T sponsor

TNT Eastern Conference Finals scorebug, 2025

We just never liked TNT's playoff scorebugs. They're cramped. You have to really squeeze your eyes to read what it's saying. Everything is packed into this compact vertical layout and it doesn't breathe the way ESPN's does. The gold on "GAME 1" is fine, but then again the whole thing looks kind of off. The text is small, the spacing is tight, and it just doesn't have the presence that a Conference Finals scorebug should have.

This was the last season of TNT's NBA coverage, so this is the final TNT NBA scorebug we'll ever see. We're not going to miss this design.

Grade: D

ESPN Finals Scorebug (Minimal Version)

ESPN NBA Finals scorebug 2025 minimal version with Finals gold script logo series dashes

ESPN Finals scorebug, minimal version during gameplay

The minimal version of the Finals scorebug is what ESPN shows during certain stretches. The Finals script is in gold on the right side, and the series dashes sit below the team scores. We like that the gold treatment carries over to this version too. It's a nice touch that keeps the Finals feel even in the slimmed-down bug.

ESPN Finals Scorebug (Full Version)

ESPN NBA Finals scorebug 2025 full expanded version with Finals cursive logo YouTube TV Game 7 series score

ESPN Finals scorebug, full version with series score

The full version is what ESPN shows for most of the game. It has the cursive "Finals" script logo, the series dashes, the game number, and the gold trim around everything. We like all of that. The gold color scheme immediately separates this from every other round. You turn on the TV and you know this is the NBA Finals just from the scorebug.

The issue is "Presented by YouTube TV" everywhere. They have no choice, it's part of the sponsorship deal, but it's just a lot. The gold treatment is great. The Finals script is great. The overall design is solid. It's just cluttered with sponsor branding.

Finals Scorebug Grade: B+

Throwback: 2015 NBA Finals Scorebug

ESPN NBA Finals 2015 scorebug Golden State Warriors Cleveland Cavaliers The Finals cursive script GS leads 3-2

ESPN Finals scorebug, 2015. Warriors vs. Cavaliers.

Look at that. "The Finals" in the cursive script underneath, "GS LEADS 3-2" right there. Clean, direct, no YouTube TV branding taking up half the bar. The 2015 version was maybe a little better. The gold treatment on the current Finals bug is nice, but the old one had that simplicity to it. Sometimes less is more.

Our Rankings

Scorebug Grade
1. 2025 ESPN Western Conference Finals A
2. 2025 ESPN First Round A-
3. 2025 ESPN Finals B+
4. 2025 TNT Playoffs C+
5. 2025 TNT Eastern Conference Finals D

ESPN's Western Conference Finals scorebug is the best of the bunch. The silver treatment, the full round name, and the clean design make it the winner. The first round bug is solid too. The Finals bug has the gold and the script but the YouTube TV clutter holds it back. And the TNT bug? We're not going to miss it.

The big takeaway is that ESPN knows how to make each round feel different through the scorebug. The broadcast presentation builds as the playoffs go deeper. Now if only the NBA would do the same thing with the court branding.
