NBC is making its big return to Major League Baseball this season. The network hasn't been a regular home for MLB in years. You'd expect the scorebug to reflect that -- something fresh, something that says "we're here now."
Instead, they carried over what they already use on local broadcasts.
NBC's national MLB scorebug
If you watch Phillies games on NBC Sports Philadelphia or any other local NBC affiliate, this national scorebug is going to look very familiar. The layout, the fonts, the color blocking -- it's the same thing with minor tweaks. For a national debut, that's underwhelming.
The Local Version Actually Has More Personality
NBC Sports Philadelphia local scorebug via ESPN Unlimited, with Opening Day banner
During the Phillies' Opening Day game -- which was available through ESPN Unlimited for viewers in blacked-out markets -- the local NBC Sports feed had an Opening Day banner sitting on top of the scorebug. Small detail, but it made the broadcast feel like an event. The national version doesn't have that energy.
That little banner on top gives the scorebug context. It tells you this isn't just another game. The national broadcast could learn something from it.
The Verdict
Maybe NBC is saving a different look for tonight's Dodgers broadcast. Maybe the prime-time national games will get a separate treatment. But based on what we've seen so far, it's bland. It doesn't make you feel like you're watching something special.
NBC has the chance to build something that feels like appointment television for baseball. The scorebug should be part of that. Right now it just feels like a regional broadcast that accidentally ended up on the national feed.
The jury is still out, but the first impression is a miss.
