What Is the Patch on MLB Caps This Weekend? 2026 Players' Weekend, Explained

By Jake Daneshgar·

If you turned on a Major League Baseball game this weekend and noticed a small patch on the side of every cap, on both teams, in every ballpark, you are not imagining it. That is the Players' Weekend patch, and all 30 clubs are wearing it from Friday, August 21 through Sunday, August 23, 2026.

Here is the short answer, and then the longer one: the patch is the Players' Weekend logo, it sits on the side of the cap, every player, coach and manager in the league is wearing it, and it is the only thing about the uniform that changes. No nickname jerseys, no special uniforms. Just the patch.

Here is what it looks like on an actual cap. This is the Twins version, and every other club's is the same patch in the same spot.

What the Patch on MLB Caps Actually Is

The patch is the official Players' Weekend logo, applied to the side panel of each team's regular game cap. It is a league-wide mark rather than a team-specific one, so it looks the same on a Dodgers cap as it does on an Orioles cap. Teams keep their normal caps underneath it.

That is the entire on-field uniform change. Every club is wearing its usual jersey rotation this weekend, right down to City Connects and alternates. On Friday night alone, ten teams wore City Connect jerseys, and every one of those jerseys was paired with a normal team cap carrying the Players' Weekend patch. If your team looked different this weekend, that was the regular uniform schedule doing its thing, not Players' Weekend.

We tracked every jersey worn across the weekend in our 2026 MLB uniform tracker, which logs all 30 teams' looks game by game.

Why It Is Just a Patch Now, and Not Nickname Jerseys

This is the part that trips people up, because Players' Weekend used to look completely different.

From 2017 to 2019, Players' Weekend was one of the loudest uniform events on the sports calendar. Teams wore brightly colored, Little League style pullover jerseys with players' nicknames on the back instead of surnames, paired with matching caps and, in 2019, an all-black and all-white set that most fans remember for being nearly impossible to read on television. Nobody was neutral about them.

The event then went away, and when it returned in 2024, MLB brought it back without the alternate uniforms. Since then it has been a cap-patch event, and 2026 follows that same template. It is comfortably the tamest version of Players' Weekend there has ever been, which is either a relief or a disappointment depending on how you felt about the nicknames.

One consequence of the patch-only format: it is genuinely league-wide. The Yankees, who famously sat out the nickname jerseys, wear the patch like everyone else, because a league-wide cap patch does not ask a club to change its uniform identity. That is exactly the kind of compromise the Yankees will accept when a full alternate is off the table.

The Real Customization Moved to the Gear

The uniforms went back to normal, but the personalization did not disappear. It moved off the jersey and onto everything a player holds or wears on their feet.

Custom bats. This is the centerpiece now. More than 400 players are swinging custom bat designs this weekend, built through Victus and Marucci, with artwork honoring hometowns and home countries, family members, alma maters, old nicknames and charitable causes. It is the largest participation the program has had. Julio Rodriguez went Spider-Man, and Jordan Walker brought two: an Iron Man bat and a Home Run Derby champion bat.

Custom cleats. Players can wear personalized cleats across all three days, which is where a lot of the visual creativity that used to live on the jerseys ended up.

Branded caps and batting practice tees. Players' Weekend branded caps and BP shirts appear before games, which is why pregame footage looks more special than the game itself does.

Custom batting gloves. As part of MLB's Latino cultural platform, custom batting gloves are being worn this weekend under a dedicated banner.

After the weekend, the custom bats and cleats go up on MLB Auctions, with proceeds going to charities the players choose themselves.

The Three Daily Themes

MLB built the 2026 weekend around three themes, one per day, carried across in-stadium features, broadcasts and social:

The themes drive the storytelling and the bat and cleat designs. They do not change anything about the uniforms. The Off-Field Interests day is where you get things like Pete Crow-Armstrong's locker listing his three favorite albums.

How This Compares to MLB's Other Patch and Cap Weekends

Players' Weekend is one of several league-wide uniform moments on the calendar, and they are easy to mix up when your team suddenly looks different:

The pattern is worth knowing: when caps change league-wide, it is usually Armed Forces Day, the Fourth or Hall of Fame Weekend. When a small patch shows up on the side of the cap and nothing else moves, it is Players' Weekend.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the patch on MLB players' hats this weekend? It is the Players' Weekend patch. All 30 MLB teams are wearing the Players' Weekend logo on the side of their caps from Friday, August 21 through Sunday, August 23, 2026. It is a league-wide mark, so it is the same patch on every team's cap.

When is MLB Players' Weekend 2026? Friday, August 21 through Sunday, August 23, 2026. The patch is worn across all three days and comes off once the weekend ends.

Do MLB teams wear special uniforms for Players' Weekend 2026? No. The cap patch is the only uniform change. Every team wears its normal jersey rotation across the weekend, including City Connect uniforms and alternates.

Why don't MLB players wear nickname jerseys anymore? The nickname jerseys ran from 2017 to 2019. When Players' Weekend returned in 2024, MLB brought it back as a cap-patch event without the alternate uniforms, and 2026 follows that same format.

Where is the Players' Weekend patch on the cap? On the side panel of the cap. Teams wear their normal game caps, with the Players' Weekend logo added to the side.

Do all 30 MLB teams wear the Players' Weekend patch? Yes. Every player, coach and manager across the league wears it, including clubs like the Yankees that skipped the nickname jerseys in the 2017 to 2019 era.

What do MLB players wear for Players' Weekend besides the patch? Custom bats and custom cleats are the centerpiece. More than 400 players are using custom bat designs this year through Victus and Marucci, plus custom cleats, custom batting gloves, and Players' Weekend branded caps and batting practice shirts before games.

What are the Players' Weekend themes for 2026? Three themes, one per day: Off-Field Interests, Causes, and Appreciation. They shape the in-stadium and broadcast storytelling and inspire many of the custom bat and cleat designs.

Can I buy the Players' Weekend cap? Yes. New Era sells the Players' Weekend caps as a 59FIFTY Authentic Collection release, with the patch on the side exactly as the players wear it, and they are available for all 30 teams.

Can I buy the Players' Weekend custom bats and cleats? The custom bats and cleats are auctioned on MLB Auctions after the weekend, with proceeds going to charities chosen by the players.

Why is my team wearing a patch on their hat this weekend? Because it is Players' Weekend. It is a league-wide event, so your team is wearing the same patch every other club is wearing, and the caps go back to normal on Monday.

Is Players' Weekend the same as Hall of Fame Weekend? No. Hall of Fame Weekend is in late July and all 30 teams wear throwback caps for it. Players' Weekend is in late August and the caps stay current with a patch added to the side.

The Bottom Line

The patch on every MLB cap this weekend is the Players' Weekend logo, worn league-wide from August 21 to 23, 2026, and it is the only thing about the uniform that changes. The event that once gave baseball nickname jerseys and an unreadable all-black set is now a small mark on the side of a normal cap, with all of the personality moved onto custom bats, cleats and batting gloves that get auctioned for charity afterward. If you want to know what your team actually wore on the field this weekend, that is a uniform schedule question, not a Players' Weekend one, and our MLB uniform tracker has every jersey logged.
