Field of Dreams 2027: The Royals Already Showed Their Uniform, and the Red Sox Left a 1930s Clue

By Jake Daneshgar·

The 2026 Field of Dreams Game had barely finished when MLB announced the next one. The Kansas City Royals will host the Boston Red Sox in Dyersville, Iowa on August 12, 2027, with NBC carrying it nationally.

Then the Royals did something almost nobody does. They posted a photo of the uniform they will wear, 364 days before the game.

Wait, Aren't Those Just the Royals' Normal Uniforms?

That is the first reaction almost everyone has, and it is the reason this reveal is more interesting than it looks. Kansas City is one of the few clubs whose modern home uniform is close enough to its original that a throwback reads as a regular jersey at a glance.

It is not the regular jersey. This is a throwback to the 1969 inaugural season home uniform, and the differences are all small.

The wordmark comparison and the flannel-texture catch are Chris Creamer's work at SportsLogos.Net, who spotted both within hours of the reveal.

That last detail is the one worth caring about. Throwback jerseys have spent two decades being modern jerseys with old graphics printed on them. Building a fabric pattern that reads as flannel on camera is a different level of effort, and if it works in Iowa it is the sort of thing every other club copies within two seasons.

The Real History Behind This Uniform

The Royals wore this home set in 1969 and 1970 exactly as shown. They added a patch to the left sleeve in 1971, and switched from a button-up front to a pullover in 1973.

One thing is missing from the photo. The genuine 1969 uniform carried a commemorative patch marking the 100th anniversary of professional baseball, worn league-wide that season. It is not visible in what Kansas City posted, which is either a deliberate simplification or a detail still to come.

What the Red Sox Are Hiding

Boston went the other way entirely. The only thing anyone has to work with is the logo MLB put in the announcement graphic: a plain block red B.

That is not the Red Sox's current cap logo, and it is not a random choice. It is the style Boston wore from 1933 to 1935.

If the jersey matches the cap, the most likely candidate is the 1934 road uniform: a grey jersey with red piping down the front and BOSTON arched across the chest in red with blue trim, in a serifed lettering that is not quite block. The other possibility is the 1935 version, which drops the piping and uses plain red block letters.

There is precedent for a club wearing a cap from one year and a jersey from another at this game, so this is not settled. Boston has said nothing beyond the logo.

Why This Matchup Works

Neither club has an obvious tie to Dyersville, and both presidents leaned on different arguments for it.

Royals president Cullen Maxey framed it geographically: Royals territory already covers the Midwest, Dyersville included, so Kansas City hosting is a natural fit.

Red Sox president Sam Kennedy went at the sentiment instead, saying taking the field in Iowa, in a place that reminds people why they fall in love with baseball, will be special.

From a uniform standpoint the pairing is better than either of them said. A 1969 Kansas City home set against a 1930s Boston road set puts roughly thirty-five years between the two uniforms on the field, which is the widest era gap this game has ever staged. The 2026 edition put the Phillies and Twins in looks from adjacent decades. This one will not.

The Bottom Line

The Royals will wear their 1969 inaugural home uniform, off-white with a flannel-effect weave, a thick blue collar, no front number and the original Royals script. The Red Sox have shown a 1933 to 1935 block B cap logo and nothing else, with the 1934 grey road set the best guess. The game is August 12, 2027 in Dyersville, Iowa on NBC. A full unveiling is expected next summer, since the 2026 uniforms were not revealed until July of this year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is playing in the 2027 Field of Dreams Game?

The Kansas City Royals host the Boston Red Sox in Dyersville, Iowa on August 12, 2027, with NBC carrying the game nationally.

What uniforms will the Royals wear at the 2027 Field of Dreams Game?

A throwback to their 1969 inaugural season home uniform: off-white with a woven pattern imitating wool flannel, a thick blue collar, no number on the front, no sleeve patch, and the original Royals script used from 1969 to 2001.

How is the Royals throwback different from their normal jersey?

Four things. The thick blue collar, the missing front number, the missing left-sleeve logo patch, and the script itself, where the 1969 R lines up with the bottom of the o instead of dipping below it. The fabric is also off-white with a flannel-effect weave rather than modern white polyester.

What uniform will the Red Sox wear at the 2027 Field of Dreams Game?

Boston has not announced one. MLB's announcement graphic used a plain block red B, the cap logo the Red Sox wore from 1933 to 1935, which points toward the 1934 grey road uniform with red piping and an arched BOSTON across the chest.

When is the 2027 Field of Dreams Game?

August 12, 2027, at the Field of Dreams site in Dyersville, Iowa.

When will the 2027 Field of Dreams uniforms be officially unveiled?

A formal unveiling is expected in summer 2027. The 2026 Phillies and Twins uniforms were not unveiled until July 2026, about a month before that game.
