Of all 32 Hometown Remix jerseys the NHL and Fanatics revealed on Monday, the Pittsburgh Penguins' is the best. We ranked it No. 1 of 32. One word covers it: perfect.
What the Penguins' Hometown Remix Jersey Looks Like
Pittsburgh built the sweater around pop art and Pittsburgh native Andy Warhol. The base is a deep blue, trimmed in light blue and gold. The skating penguin on the chest gets halftone dots and offset color like a 1960s screen print, and the numbers on the back get the same dot treatment. The shoulder patches use the same offset style: an igloo for the old Civic Arena and a triangle for the Three Rivers. Down on the hem, colors stand in for the city's boroughs.
Why It Works
It has one idea, and it commits to it. Pop art is the theme, and every piece of the sweater speaks that same language, from the crest to the numbers to the patches. Nothing on it is fighting for attention.
It also keeps what makes a hockey sweater great: a big logo in the middle of the chest and a strong color behind it. The deep blue with light blue trim reads clean from the upper deck, and the halftone detail rewards anyone who sees it up close.
It reminds us of the Penguins' 2008 Winter Classic jersey, which is about as perfect as a hockey sweater gets. That jersey proved Pittsburgh looks great in blue. This one proves it again in a way nobody else in the league could pull off, because no other city has Warhol.
How It Compares
The Washington Capitals finished No. 2 with their blue Capitol Dome sweater, white marble yoke and bronze trim. Pittsburgh and Washington are our two favorite uniform teams in the league, and they finish one and two again.
At the other end, the Vegas Golden Knights' casino sweater finished last. Vegas put four themes on one jersey. Pittsburgh picked one and nailed it. Fittingly, the Penguins debut theirs on Tuesday against Vegas.
When the Penguins Wear It
The Penguins wear the Hometown Remix jersey 10 times this season. It debuts Tuesday, Nov. 3 against the Vegas Golden Knights, then returns Nov. 28 vs. Toronto, Dec. 6 vs. San Jose, Dec. 18 vs. Seattle, Jan. 21 vs. Anaheim, Feb. 2 vs. Tampa Bay, March 9 vs. Ottawa, March 25 vs. New Jersey, March 30 at Philadelphia and April 1 vs. the Islanders. Every date is on our Penguins uniform schedule.
