The NBA doesn't have a home jersey anymore. It has a closet, and the home team grabs whatever it wants. So let's play this out: what if the league banned white at home? The home team wears color. The visitor wears white. Every night, all season, playoffs included.
This is a what-if. The NBA has not proposed anything like it, and no team has asked for it. But we think it would fix the league's uniform mess overnight, and we ran the numbers on who it would hurt. Some of you are going to hate this.
Quick Answers
- Do NBA home teams have to wear white? No. Since Nike took over in 2017-18, the league has had no home or road uniforms. The home team picks, and the visitor picks something that contrasts.
- How often does the home team wear white now? In 304 of the 1,200 games the NBA has dated for 2026-27, the home team is scheduled in the white Association jersey. That's about 25 percent. Our count, from the league's own schedule.
- Who loses the most? The Bulls, with 22 of 40 home dates in white. Then the Knicks (16), Celtics and Thunder (15 each).
- Who barely notices? The Nuggets (3 home whites), Suns and Raptors (4 each).
- Our verdict: do it.
How It Works Today
When Nike became the NBA's uniform maker in 2017-18, the league dropped "home" and "away" completely. The old white home uniform became the Association Edition and the old color road uniform became the Icon Edition, CBS Sports reported at the time. Add the Statement, City and Classic Editions and a team can carry five jerseys a season.
The home team chooses its jersey for every game, and the visitor works around it. We explained why teams love that setup in why NBA teams don't wear white at home: more jerseys on the court in front of the home crowd means more jerseys sold.
The result is a coin flip. Using the NBA's published 2026-27 uniform schedule (the last 30 games wait on the NBA Cup knockout draw), we counted every call:
2026-27 home jerseys, by the NBA's schedule
So the home team already wears color three games out of four. The problem isn't white or color. The problem is that nobody knows which until the schedule comes out, and 385 games don't have an Association white on the floor at all.
The Rule We Would Write
Home team: any color jersey it wants. Road team: the white Association. No exceptions.
That's not a crazy idea. It's the NHL. Hockey home teams wore white for decades, then the league flipped it for the 2003-04 season so home teams wear their dark sweaters and visitors wear white, a change driven by the rise of colored third jerseys. Every NHL fan knows what the home team is wearing before the puck drops. You can check it yourself on our NHL uniform schedule.
The NBA version keeps everything teams like about the current system. The Icon, the Statement, the City and the Classic all stay home, in front of the fans most likely to buy them. The only jersey that moves is the white, and it goes on the road, where it gets seen in 29 other arenas.
The Winners
The Lakers. Gold at home is the oldest look the Lakers have. Before the Nike era the Lakers traditionally wore gold at home and purple on the road, one of the few teams to wear a light color other than white at home. A ban on home whites makes gold at Crypto.com Arena the law. The Sunday whites, which started in 2002-03 as a tribute to broadcaster Chick Hearn, would become a road jersey. We can live with that. Lakers gold Icon: home, always
Nuggets navy Icon: already there
The Nuggets, Suns and Raptors. They already live in this world. Denver is scheduled in white for 3 of 40 home dates, Phoenix and Toronto for 4 each. Under our rule, they'd lose almost nothing. Nuggets · Suns · Raptors
The white jersey itself. Right now the Association is a jersey teams wear when they feel like it. Make it the road uniform and every team's white shows up 41 times a season, guaranteed.
You. One rule means you can buy a ticket to a road game and know your team will be in white. Try that today.
The Losers
The Bulls, by a mile. Chicago is scheduled in the white Association for 22 of its 40 home dates, the most in the league and the only team over half. The white Bulls jersey with red lettering at the United Center is about as classic as the NBA gets, and our rule sends it on the road for good. Bulls fans would riot, and honestly they'd have a point. Bulls 2026-27 uniform schedule
Bulls: 22 home whites
Knicks: 16
Celtics: 15
The Knicks and the Celtics. New York has 16 home whites, Boston 15. The white Knicks jersey with orange "NEW YORK" at Madison Square Garden and the white Celtics jersey with green lettering at TD Garden are two of the best home looks in sports. Losing them at home is the real cost of this idea, and we won't pretend otherwise. Knicks · Celtics
The Thunder. Oklahoma City has 15 home whites, tied with Boston, nearly as many as its 16 home dates in the blue Icon. More than a third of its home dates would change. Thunder 2026-27 uniform schedule
The Heat in the playoffs. Miami's fans have dressed the arena in white for home playoff games since the team launched the White Hot campaign in 2006. Under our rule, the Heat would be in black or red in front of that white crowd every time. Some of you will say that looks better. The Heat only have 10 home whites in the regular season anyway. The Matchups That Would Break
Here's why the rule needs the road team in white, not just "something that contrasts." Let both teams wear color and these games fall apart:
Bulls red
Rockets red
Raptors red
Heat red
Four red jerseys. Pick any two and you have a problem.
- Red on red: the Bulls' red Icon, the Rockets' red Icon, the Raptors' red Icon and the Heat's red Statement. Bulls vs. Rockets in color is a blur.
- Green on green: the Celtics' Kelly green against the Bucks' darker green. Close enough to ruin a broadcast.
- Blue on blue: the Thunder's blue, the Mavericks' blue and the Clippers' blue Icons.
- Black on black: the Heat's black Icon, the Trail Blazers' black Icon and the Bulls' black pinstripe Statement.
Color against color can work when the colors are far apart. On Wednesday the Lakers wore the gold Icon at the Clippers, who were in their blue Icon, and it looked great. That's in our NBA uniform tracker. But "far apart" is a judgment call, and judgment calls are how you get red on red. White on the road ends the argument.
Why We'd Do It Anyway
We've argued the other side before. In May we said the NBA should bring back white at home in the playoffs, and we still think any fixed rule beats no rule. But be honest about which rule could actually happen. Teams aren't giving up colored jerseys at home. The money is too good. A white-at-home mandate fights the business. A color-at-home mandate matches it, and still gives fans the one thing they've lost since 2017: certainty.
The Bulls, Knicks and Celtics lose a home look they love. Everybody else gets a league where you know what you're watching before you turn it on.
Bulls fans, Knicks fans, Celtics fans: tell us we're wrong.
