Jake's Fix: The Chargers Should Make Super Chargers Their Full-Time Uniform (and Take the Numbers Off the Helmet)

By Jake Daneshgar·

Jake's Fix is our series on how we'd fix a team's uniform, one team at a time.

The Chargers bring out their navy Super Chargers uniform three times this season, starting Sunday against the Texans. Every time they do, it is the best-looking team on the field. So here is our take: stop making it a special occasion. Make it the full-time uniform.

Why Navy Works

The Super Chargers set is navy from helmet to pants, with a white bolt and gold trim on the numbers. It is a modern version of the navy look the franchise wore until 2006, and it gives the Chargers something the current uniforms don't: an edge. Navy with a white bolt looks tough. It looks like a team you don't want to play.

The Powder Blue Isn't Really Powder Blue

The case for the current home uniform is that powder blue is classic Chargers. We agree the classic powder blue is great. The problem is that today's jersey isn't it. It is a brighter, more saturated blue that reads closer to sky blue on TV than the soft powder blue of the 1960s and the throwbacks fans loved. If you're going to lean on nostalgia, the color has to actually be the nostalgic one.

The Chargers need a new direction more than they need another season of a powder blue that isn't quite powder blue. Navy is that direction.

How We'd Build It

  • Helmet: navy, with the white bolt. No number on the side. The helmet numbers came back with the 2020 redesign, and they have done nothing but bring the Chargers bad luck. There is history on our side: when the Chargers first went to a navy helmet in 1974, they dropped the numbers. A clean navy shell with just the bolt is the best version of this helmet.
  • Home: navy jersey, white pants.
  • Road: white jersey, navy pants.
  • Specials: keep the all-navy look for a few big home games, and bring powder blue back as a true throwback, in the real shade.

Navy over white at home and white over navy on the road gives the Chargers two strong looks that clearly belong together, instead of a closet full of blues that compete with each other.

When You Can See It This Season

The Chargers wear the all-navy Super Chargers set three more times in 2026: Sunday, November 8 against Houston, November 29 against New England on Sunday Night Football, and Week 17 against Kansas City. For the Texans game, the field changes too: the navy helmet goes at midfield. Every other week is in our Chargers 2026 uniform schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should the Chargers make navy their primary uniform? We think so. The navy Super Chargers set is the best uniform the Chargers own, and making it the full-time look, navy at home and white with navy pants on the road, would give the team a sharper identity.

When did the Chargers last wear navy as their regular uniform? The Chargers wore navy until 2006. The Super Chargers set brought it back as an alternate.

Why do the Chargers have numbers on their helmets? The Chargers brought helmet numbers back in their 2020 redesign; they had them from 1960 to 1973 and dropped them when they switched to a navy helmet in 1974. We would take them off again.

When do the Chargers wear Super Chargers in 2026? At home against the Texans on November 8, the Patriots on November 29 and the Chiefs in Week 17.
