Flames 2004 Black C Jersey: Design, Schedule and When Calgary Wears It

By Jake Daneshgar·

The Calgary Flames' black C jersey is the red home sweater from their 2004 Stanley Cup Final run, back for the final season at the Scotiabank Saddledome. It makes its regular-season debut tonight, Saturday, October 24, against the Detroit Red Wings, and Calgary wears it four times in 2026-27: once against each team it beat or faced on the way to Game 7 in 2004.

The Flames unveiled it during the first period of a preseason game against the Vancouver Canucks on September 22, with 2004 alumni Robyn Regehr and Martin Gelinas in the building. The club's post was two words long:

What the Flames 2004 Jersey Looks Like

It is a near replica of the red sweater Calgary wore at home from 2003-04 through 2006-07, before the NHL moved every club to the Reebok Edge template. Here is what is on it, from the official render:

'04 Jersey Details

BaseFlames red
CrestBlack Flaming C, outlined in white and yellow
WaistBlack chevron with white and yellow stripes
SleevesBlack cuffs with matching white and yellow stripes
CollarBlack lace-up collar, "1983" and "2027" stitched inside for the Saddledome years
ShouldersThe flaming horse "Blasty" crest
PatchThe current Play Alberta sponsor patch on the chest

The black C is the whole story. Calgary's everyday home sweater uses a white Flaming C with yellow trim on red. Fill the C in black and the crest jumps off the jersey, and the black at the waist and cuffs ties it all together. The club has shown the sweater itself so far; we will add the socks and helmet once we see the full uniform on the ice tonight.

When Do the Flames Wear the 2004 Jersey?

Four home games, all at the Saddledome, one against each 2004 playoff opponent:

Tonight is also the club's '04 Celebration Night, with 2,004 replica green hard hats handed out to fans. Replica jerseys went on sale at the CGY Team Store on October 23.

The rest of the home schedule is 29 games in the classic red and nine in Calgary's Hometown Remix sweater, starting November 6 against Anaheim. The black Blasty third, the alternate since 2022-23, is not on the announced home schedule. Every date is on our Flames uniform schedule, and the Flames uniform calendar logs what they actually wear each night.

Why 2004 Still Matters in Calgary

The 2004 Flames were the team nobody saw coming. Jarome Iginla was the captain, Miikka Kiprusoff was in net and Darryl Sutter ran the bench. Calgary beat Vancouver in seven games, Detroit in six and San Jose in six, with Martin Gelinas scoring the series winner against both the Canucks and the Red Wings.

Then came Tampa Bay. The Flames led the Final 3-2, and in Game 6 a Gelinas shot looked to cross the goal line late in regulation, but no goal was called and the Lightning won in double overtime. Tampa took Game 7 2-1. Calgary fans still argue that goal was in, and this sweater is the one that team wore at home through the whole run. That is why the schedule lines up the way it does.

Our Take: The Black C Looks Incredible

Jake's Take

I love this one. It's super nice. The black C on the red looks incredible, and the black chevron at the bottom with the white and yellow stripes finishes it off. It feels like a real hockey sweater from the best era of jerseys, and bringing it back for the last year at the Saddledome against the four 2004 teams is perfect. I wish they wore it more than four times.

The current red home is a great sweater, but the white C blends into the stripes a little. The black C does not blend into anything. It is the clearest crest in the league tonight, and it is a reminder that black, used as an accent, made the Flames look their best.
