NHL Jerseys Ranked 2026-27: All 32 Teams' Uniforms Graded, Worst to Best

By ColorWay Sports Staff·

The 2026-27 NHL season is underway, so we went through every closet in the league and put a letter grade on each one. Which NHL team has the best jerseys this season? We ranked all 32, judging the whole closet together: the home sweater, the road white, the third, the throwbacks and the specials, and whether it all holds together as one identity.

This is a throwback season rather than a rebrand season. No club changed its home or road set, the only change to a primary sweater is a sponsor patch in Vancouver, and the new looks are returns: Calgary's 2004 red, the Rangers' navy shield, the Blues' '90s retro. Every team also gets a Hometown Remix sweater from Fanatics this season, but none has been shown yet, so they are noted here and not graded. We will grade all 32 on our Hometown Remix tracker as they land, and the same goes for the six outdoor-game sweaters still to come.

A note on how we grade. This is about the sweater as a piece of design: the colours, the striping, the crest, the numbers and how the closet works as a set. Winning is not supposed to matter. We are counting down from 32 to the best closet in hockey.

32. Utah Mammoth

CColorWay Sports Grade

The closet: Rock black home with the Mountain Mammoth crest and the Utah badge on the shoulders, salt white road with the diagonal stair-step UTAH wordmark, no third sweater, and a Winter Classic sweater for December 31 still to be unveiled.

The Mountain Mammoth crest is a genuinely good logo, with the Wasatch peaks, the state outline and the tusks curling into a U. The sweaters around it do not match that ambition. The striping is a carry-over from the Utah Hockey Club placeholder, so the black home reads like a thousand beer-league sweaters, and the stair-step UTAH on the road set leaves the white sweater without a crest. Two sweaters, no alternate in the franchise's first two seasons, and the one coming is an outdoor one-off. This is the closet with the most room to grow, which is why it sits last. Utah Mammoth uniform schedule.

31. Florida Panthers

CColorWay Sports Grade

The closet: Red home and white road from the 2016 military-inspired set: the shield crest with PANTHERS over the panther head, thick contrasting chest and sleeve stripes, flat gold trim and the prowling-panther sleeve patch. No standing third.

Two Stanley Cups in the last three seasons, and still our least favourite primary set in the league. The idea was a military dress uniform, and it shows up as too many parts competing on one sweater: the shield crest, a chest band, sleeve bands, a sleeve patch and gold trim that is so flat it reads as tan on television. The 2026 Winter Classic sweater, red with cream lettering and a chain-stitched leaping panther, proved Florida can do clean and classic. It just is not in the closet this season. Florida Panthers uniform schedule.

30. Columbus Blue Jackets

CColorWay Sports Grade

The closet: Navy home and white road with red and white striping, the star-in-flag crest and a single star on the shoulders. The 1857 cannon third, the best thing Columbus owns, has not been confirmed for this season.

The core set is navy, red and white with a flag-and-star crest, which describes about a third of American sports. There is no detail on the home or the road that could only be Columbus. The cannon third is the exception, with vintage white, light blue and silver accents and a crest that actually tells a story about the Civil War history the name comes from. With that sweater in limbo, the closet is two competent, anonymous sweaters. Columbus Blue Jackets uniform schedule.

29. Tampa Bay Lightning

C+ColorWay Sports Grade

The closet: Blue home and white road from the 2011 set: the bolt crest, one thick stripe on the sleeves, hem and socks, a tie-down collar and the roundel on the shoulders. The black Legacy third, with three Cup years in the collar, was signed through 2025-26 and has not been confirmed.

Tampa Bay simplified on purpose in 2011 and it worked for a decade. The single thick stripe is crisp, and the white bolt on blue is about as readable as a crest gets. The trouble is that there is nothing else. One stripe, one colour plus white, and a road sweater with a TAMPA BAY wordmark that looks more like a practice jersey than a game one. The black Legacy third added the silver and history the primaries lack, and right now it is in limbo. Tampa Bay Lightning uniform schedule.

28. Nashville Predators

C+ColorWay Sports Grade

The closet: Gold home and white road with navy trim, the guitar-pick shoulder patch with the Tennessee tri-star, guitar-string detail in the numbers and piano keys inside the collar. No standing third.

We love that Nashville owns a gold home sweater. Nobody else in hockey would dare and it looks like no other team on the ice. The gripe is the hidden music theme: guitar strings inside the numbers and piano keys in the collar are details for the merchandise page, invisible from the stands, and the road white is a generic template with gold on the shoulders. One brave colour and two sweaters is not quite a closet. Nashville Predators uniform schedule.

27. Vegas Golden Knights

C+ColorWay Sports Grade

The closet: Metallic gold home since 2022-23 with black, steel grey and red striping, the white road, and the original steel grey reported to leave the regular rotation and become a throwback in Season X. The Hometown Remix is expected to take the third slot, and a Stadium Series sweater is coming for February 20 at Dallas.

Vegas had one of the best expansion looks in decades in the steel grey, and the reported move to retire it from the rotation takes the best sweater out of the closet. The metallic gold home is a striking colour that never looks the same twice, washed out under some arena lights and brassy under others. The white road is fine. Losing the grey costs Vegas a full grade. Vegas Golden Knights uniform schedule.

26. New Jersey Devils

C+ColorWay Sports Grade

The closet: Red home and white road on the 2017 template, black shoulders, three-stripe arm bands and the NJ horned-devil crest. The black JERSEY script third had an 11-game farewell last season and was retired, so the closet is two sweaters plus the Hometown Remix.

The red and black is a strong combination, and the NJ crest with the tail and horns is one of the cleanest marks in the league. What we miss is the green. The Devils' best moments in uniform have been the red and green throwbacks, and the 2017 update dropped the hem stripe so the sweater ends abruptly. With the JERSEY script retired, New Jersey has two sweaters and no alternate, and the grade reflects a closet that got smaller. New Jersey Devils uniform schedule.

25. Minnesota Wild

B-ColorWay Sports Grade

The closet: Forest green home and white road with iron range red and wheat trim and the Wild animal crest, plus the kelly green and yellow 78s throwback. The team app shows a fourth sweater slot, which looks like the Hometown Remix.

The Wild crest is a great logo, the animal outline with a sunset and a North Star hidden inside it. The green and red home is unique in the league, and wheat is a lovely accent colour. The 2017 striping, though, is thin and spaced out, and the white road reads very busy for so little stripe. The 78s, a North Stars nod in kelly green and bright yellow, is the most fun sweater in the closet and it is not even in the Wild colours. Minnesota Wild uniform schedule.

24. San Jose Sharks

B-ColorWay Sports Grade

The closet: Pacific teal home and white road from the 2022 set inspired by the 1991 originals, with teal helmets, pants and gloves, plus the black Cali Fin third with the Evolve Fin crest and teal and white serape striping.

Teal is one of the great colours in hockey and San Jose went back to the 1991 shade. Teal pants are a bold call we admire. The dated part is the crest: the shark biting the stick is detailed for a 1990s cartoon and loses its line weight on the current sweater. The Cali Fin third is the opposite, a modern fin crest with serape stripes, and it is clearly the best Sharks sweater on the ice. San Jose Sharks uniform schedule.

23. Anaheim Ducks

B-ColorWay Sports Grade

The closet: Orange home and white road from the 2024 rebrand: the refreshed duck-mask crest, black, white and gold waist stripes, chevron sleeve stripes into a black cuff, and the webbed-foot D on the shoulders. No third has been announced.

Going all in on orange was the right move. Nobody else in hockey wears it as a primary, and the chevron sleeve stripes give the set a shape we have not seen before. The duck mask, refreshed, remains a bit cartoonish next to the sleek stripes, and the white road with rounded orange shoulders is much stronger than the home. Two good sweaters and no alternate, two seasons running. Anaheim Ducks uniform schedule.

22. Ottawa Senators

B-ColorWay Sports Grade

The closet: Black home and white road from the 2020 return to the 1992 look: the centurion crest bordered in gold, two red arm bars framing the numbers, a red collar and a wide red hem stripe. The red Ignite the Red alternate with a black yoke and a more detailed plumed centurion returns after 13 games last season.

The home and road are among the best looks in the league: the 2D centurion is bold and the arm bars that frame the numbers are distinctive. The red alternate pulls it all back down. It stacks a black yoke, wide red stripes, metallic gold accents and a busier crest onto one sweater, and the plumed centurion loses the bold readability of the primary. One of the strongest core sets with one of the weakest thirds. Ottawa Senators uniform schedule.

21. Philadelphia Flyers

BColorWay Sports Grade

The closet: Burnt orange home, restored in 2023, with wide black and white shoulder and arm striping wrapped around the sleeve numbers, and the white road with orange panels. The 2018 black alternate was not worn once last season, so it is two sweaters for the 60th season, plus the Hometown Remix and ten Independence Edition nights.

The Flying P is a perfect logo and the burnt orange is right. The 2023 update went for the 1970s Bobby Clarke shape and it is cleaner than what came before. Our gripe is the nameplate in a contrasting colour, which slices the back of the sweater in half, and the 60th season arrives without a throwback, patch or anything to mark it so far. Strong core, quiet closet. Philadelphia Flyers uniform schedule.

20. Dallas Stars

BColorWay Sports Grade

The closet: Victory green home and white road with white and black stripes and the silver D-star crest, plus the black The 99 third with white and silver star-point stripes, Texas shoulder patches and 3OT 1999 inside the collar. A Stadium Series sweater for February 20 at AT&T Stadium is still to come.

Victory green is a lovely colour and the D-star is crisp. The core sweaters, though, have the 2013 design on a modern template, and they lack the swagger the Stars had in the Modano era. The 99 is the fix, a black sweater with star-point stripes that run across the chest and back, and it is the sweater Dallas fans actually want. A Stadium Series look at home in Arlington could push Dallas into the top half. Dallas Stars uniform schedule.

19. Colorado Avalanche

BColorWay Sports Grade

The closet: Burgundy home and white road with the 1995 mountain-peak striping in blue, white and silver, with blue helmets and pants since 2020-21. The navy Colorado-flag C alternate is still a product, last season's Nordiques throwback has not been announced again, and an off-white Winter Classic sweater with burgundy accents is reported for December 31 at Utah.

The burgundy and blue are classic, and the 1995 peak striping is one of the few original 1990s designs still on the ice. The blue pants changed everything for the better. What holds Colorado in the middle of the pack is the white road, where the peaks get lost, and a third sweater situation that is unclear. If the reported off-white Winter Classic lands, the closet improves. Colorado Avalanche uniform schedule.

18. Carolina Hurricanes

BColorWay Sports Grade

The closet: Black home since 2022 with the warning-flag striping, the white road introduced last season with the North Carolina flag on one shoulder and a collegiate Stormy on the other, the red alternate (15 games last season) and the Hartford Whalers green for Whalers Night on January 28.

Four sweaters, and three of them are good. The black home with hurricane warning flags in the stripes is the one design element in the league that tells you about the weather. The red is better, which is why we wish it were still the home. The Whalers green is a classic, and wearing it is a gift. The new white road, though, is the weakest piece, a lot of blocks and flags on one sweater. The champions get a solid B. Carolina Hurricanes uniform schedule.

17. Seattle Kraken

BColorWay Sports Grade

The closet: Deep sea blue home with the S-tentacle crest and red eye, ice blue and boundless blue striping, no white anywhere; the white road with deep sea blue shoulders; and the all-black Abyss Awakens third with a glow-in-the-dark crest outline, sonar-ping sleeve stripes and the arena coordinates in the collar.

The S with the tentacle and the red eye is the best logo created for a new team this century. The deep sea home, without a single piece of white, is the most daring primary sweater in the league. The ice blue is lovely. The issue is the closet growing darker. The Abyss Awakens is a fun idea with glow-in-the-dark elements, but black on deep sea blue gives Seattle two very dark sweaters and only one with any light in it. Seattle Kraken uniform schedule.

16. Buffalo Sabres

B+ColorWay Sports Grade

The closet: Royal blue home from the 2020 return to royal with the charging-buffalo crest and three gold stripes piped in white, the white road with royal shoulders, and the black and red Goathead alternate 10 times, plus the Hometown Remix 8 times.

Royal blue and gold is exactly right for Buffalo and the 2020 return fixed a decade of drift. The charging buffalo crest is a classic. The Goathead pulls the closet in another direction, black and red, the 1996 to 2006 era, and it remains the sweater a generation of fans grew up with. It goes 10 times, down from 15, which is the right amount. Two identities, both good. Buffalo Sabres uniform schedule.

15. Los Angeles Kings

B+ColorWay Sports Grade

The closet: Black home and white road from the 2024 set with silver and white 1990s-style stripes, the modernised 1988 shield-and-crown crest and a matte black helmet, plus the black crown alternate with the 1967-style silver crown and chrome helmets.

The 2024 set took the Gretzky-era look and cleaned it up, and the matte black helmets are a great touch. The crown alternate is beautiful: one silver crown, one thick silver stripe, chrome helmets on Silver Saturdays. The gripe is that both dark sweaters are black, so the closet is silver and black in two flavours. In the 60th season we would love a purple and gold nod, and so far there is none. Los Angeles Kings uniform schedule.

14. Vancouver Canucks

B+ColorWay Sports Grade

The closet: Navy orca home, with the only primary change in the league this season (an RBC mark replacing TD), the white road with navy shoulders and green accents, and the black Flying Skate alternate with red, gold and white striping, worn 20 times last season.

The orca crest is good, and the navy and green home is a well balanced primary. The Skate is the star, a 1990s design that looks just as good on a modern template, with the red, gold and white striping of the 1990s originals. Vancouver wore it 20 times, which tells you how much the club likes it too. The RBC sponsor mark is the one subtraction, a logo that was not part of the design. Vancouver Canucks uniform schedule.

13. New York Islanders

B+ColorWay Sports Grade

The closet: Royal blue home and white road from the 2017 return to the classic four-stripe orange and white pattern and the Long Island map crest. No third this season; the fan-voted navy Lighthouse arrives in 2027-28.

The map crest with the stick and the NY is one of the best logos in sport, the four-stripe pattern is the dynasty-era sweater, and royal and orange is a combination nobody else owns. The Islanders lose ground only on depth. Two sweaters for a second season running, with the fan-voted navy Lighthouse a year away. When it arrives, this closet goes up. New York Islanders uniform schedule.

12. Washington Capitals

B+ColorWay Sports Grade

The closet: Red home with the Capitals wordmark crest and three stars, the white road, and the red Screaming Eagle third with a white rounded yoke, 1970s hem striping, a lace-up collar and the 1990s Capitol Dome shoulder patch, worn 10 times this season.

The Screaming Eagle third is the best Fanatics sweater yet: it took the 1990s eagle, put it on the 1970s shape in red, and the result is better than either original. The red primaries are good too, and the wordmark crest with the stick in the t has aged better than most wordmarks. The issue is that both home and third are red, so Washington is two red sweaters and a white. Washington Capitals uniform schedule.

11. Winnipeg Jets

B+ColorWay Sports Grade

The closet: Polar night blue home with an aviator blue yoke and the roundel crest with the maple leaf and fighter jet, the white road, and the WHA-inspired Heritage blue with a red band, red numbers and red pants, worn 7 times. A Heritage Classic sweater against Montreal on October 25 and the Hometown Remix 8 times round it out.

The roundel with the jet is a smart crest and the full aviator yoke makes the home distinctive. We think the Heritage blue is better. It has the red band, the classic Jets wordmark and red pants. The home has not changed since 2011 and it shows a bit next to the Heritage, but four sweaters with a real outdoor game in October is a deep closet. Winnipeg Jets uniform schedule.

10. Edmonton Oilers

B+ColorWay Sports Grade

The closet: Royal blue home and white road with the orange yoke and the classic oil-drop crest, plus the tan Oil Country alternate with the Oilers wordmark, the derrick roundel on the shoulders and LETS GO OILERS inside the collar, 8 times this season.

The royal blue and orange is the Gretzky-era sweater and it is perfect, one of the few looks in hockey that needs no adjustment. The Oil Country is the most original alternate of last season, a broken-in tan that looks like it was found in a 1979 locker room. The only reason Edmonton is outside the top ten is the road white, which is the plainest piece in a closet with a lot of character. Edmonton Oilers uniform schedule.

9. St. Louis Blues

A-ColorWay Sports Grade

The closet: Five sweaters: the royal blue home and white road introduced in 2025-26 from the Winter Classic designs with gold and white stripes and the two-colour Blue Note, the royal third that was the home for the 2019 Cup run (3 games), the blue, yellow and red '90s retro (2 games) and the Hometown Remix (10 games).

The deepest closet in the league, and most of it is good. The 2025 primaries took the best idea from two Winter Classics and turned it into an everyday set, with gold-and-white stripes and a modernised Blue Note. The 2019 royal as a third is a smart way to keep the Cup sweater around. The '90s retro is loud, red and yellow on blue, and a lot of fun for two nights. Five sweaters, one coherent identity. St. Louis Blues uniform schedule.

8. Pittsburgh Penguins

A-ColorWay Sports Grade

The closet: Black home and white road with Pittsburgh gold and white striping and the skating penguin in the triangle, plus the gold third with the standalone penguin, three thin black sleeve stripes for the three rivers and trolley-inspired numbers. The new 60th anniversary logo is on the helmets all season.

Black and Pittsburgh gold is one of the best colour pairs in the sport, and the 1991-inspired home is the Lemieux and Jagr sweater. The gold third, three thin black stripes and trolley numbers, is a terrific use of a colour most teams treat as trim. The 60th anniversary logo is a lovely retro mark and it suits the helmets. The only flaw is the white road, plainer than its counterpart. Pittsburgh Penguins uniform schedule.

7. Calgary Flames

A-ColorWay Sports Grade

The closet: Red home in the 1980s design with yellow and white stripes, the white road from the 2019 Heritage Classic look, and the return of the 2004 Stanley Cup Final red with the black Flaming C, Blasty on the shoulders and chevron waist striping, 4 times. The black Blasty third is unconfirmed, and a Hometown Remix is coming.

Calgary went back to the 1989 Cup sweater in 2020 and it was the right decision: red, yellow and white, simple stripes, the Flaming C. The 2004 throwback is the story of the season. The black C and the chevron waist stripes are the definitive 2000s hockey sweater, and wearing it once against each of the 2004 playoff opponents in the last season at the Saddledome is perfect. A sentimental, smartly built closet. Calgary Flames uniform schedule.

6. Toronto Maple Leafs

A-ColorWay Sports Grade

The closet: Blue home and white road from the 2016 set with the 31-point veined leaf, two sleeve stripes and one thick hem stripe, the green and white St. Pats throwback on March 17, and nine Hometown Remix Nights. The black reversible third from 2022-23 through 2025-26 is not confirmed.

Blue and white, two stripes on the arms, one at the hem, and a leaf. That is the whole sweater, and it is one of the best ever. The 2016 leaf with its veins is the best version of the logo the club has had. The St. Pats is a treat once a year, green and white for a franchise that wore it a century ago. The black flipside third was never a fit, and its exit makes the closet stronger. Toronto Maple Leafs uniform schedule.

5. Boston Bruins

A-ColorWay Sports Grade

The closet: Black home from the 2025 rebrand with the refreshed Spoked-B, thicker gold and white stripes echoing the 1974 to 1995 sweaters and a crawling-bear shoulder patch reading BRUINS, and the white road with the light-background Spoked-B and the bear reading BOSTON. No third; visitors at Detroit's Centennial Game on November 18.

The 2025 rebrand was the best update of an Original Six sweater in years. The thick gold stripes bring back the Bourque era, and the 8-spoke hub (a nod to Boston as The Hub) is a smart detail. Two Spoked-B variations, one for home and one for road, is a subtle touch most fans will never notice and everybody will feel. It loses ground only on depth, with no third. Boston Bruins uniform schedule.

4. New York Rangers

AColorWay Sports Grade

The closet: Broadway blue home with the diagonal RANGERS in red with a white drop shadow, red-and-white stripes and red pants, the white road essentially unchanged since 1951-52, and the navy shield third back for 4 games at the Garden.

The diagonal RANGERS wordmark is the most famous lettering in hockey, and the white road has barely moved in 75 years for a reason. Red pants with a blue sweater is a bold choice that only works because it has always been there. The navy shield third is a 1970s design brought back with care, the thin stripes inspired by the Garden lights. Four games is the right amount for it. New York Rangers uniform schedule.

3. Detroit Red Wings

AColorWay Sports Grade

The closet: Red home with the Winged Wheel, a single white stripe on each sleeve and at the hem, white numbers and the arched vertical nameplate, and the white road, both essentially unchanged since the 1930s. Last season's Centennial sweater is not announced for this season, and the uniform for the November 18 Centennial Game against Boston is still to come.

Red and white, one stripe, one crest. The Winged Wheel is the best logo in hockey and the Red Wings have resisted every chance to complicate it. The vertical arched nameplate is the kind of detail that only a team this old can get away with. There is no third, but Detroit does not need one, and the Centennial Game against Boston on November 18 is the most anticipated uniform night of the season. Detroit Red Wings uniform schedule.

2. Montreal Canadiens

AColorWay Sports Grade

The closet: Red home with the CH and the blue band across the chest in a form that dates to 1925, the white road with red yokes and red sleeve ends, a Heritage Classic sweater for October 25 at Winnipeg, and the Hometown Remix, which would make this Montreal's first four-sweater season in years.

The red with the blue chest band is one of the oldest continuous designs in the sport and it has never needed help. The CH is perfect. The white road with red shoulders is almost as good as the home. Montreal does not chase alternates, which is why the Heritage Classic sweater on October 25 is the one we are most curious about this fall. Montreal Canadiens uniform schedule.

1. Chicago Blackhawks

AColorWay Sports Grade

The closet: Red home with the classic three-band black and white striping on the sleeves and hem, the Chief Black Hawk crest and crossed tomahawk C on the shoulders, essentially unchanged since 1955; the white road mirroring it; and the 1996 to 2009 black alternate with red and white stripes, back for at least three seasons.

The three-band striping on the arms and hem is the definitive hockey sweater design, and it is the most perfectly balanced use of red, black and white in sports. The crossed tomahawks on the shoulders is a detail that would be the best part of most sweaters. The black alternate is a 1990s classic, and it carries the same banded idea in black. Every piece of this closet is the same idea. No team in hockey does it better. Chicago Blackhawks uniform schedule.

The Bottom Line

The Original Six own the top of this list, and it is not nostalgia. The Blackhawks, Canadiens, Red Wings and Rangers all wear sweaters that have barely changed in 70 years or more, because there was never anything to fix. Boston, after its 2025 rebrand, is the one that improved its way into the top five. The best closets outside that group, Toronto, Calgary, Pittsburgh and St. Louis, all got there by leaning on their own history.

At the bottom, the pattern is the opposite. Utah, Florida, Columbus and Tampa Bay all have two sweaters doing the work of a closet, and the alternates that would help them are either missing or unconfirmed. Thirty-two Hometown Remix sweaters and six outdoor-game sweaters are still to come, and any of them could move a team. Every club's game-by-game jersey record lives in our NHL uniform schedule hub, and every new look this season is in New NHL Jerseys 2026-27.

Frequently Asked Questions

What NHL team has the best jerseys in 2026-27?

The Chicago Blackhawks, graded A in our ranking. The red home with the three-band black and white striping is essentially unchanged since 1955, and the 1996 to 2009 black alternate uses the same idea. The Montreal Canadiens, Detroit Red Wings and New York Rangers also earned an A.

What are the worst NHL jerseys in 2026-27?

The Utah Mammoth finished 32nd. The Mountain Mammoth crest is good, but the striping is carried over from the Utah Hockey Club placeholder set and the closet has no third sweater. The Florida Panthers and Columbus Blue Jackets are just above them.

What new NHL jerseys are there for 2026-27?

Every team gets a Hometown Remix special edition jersey from Fanatics, none of them revealed yet. The other new looks are returns: the Calgary Flames' 2004 home, the New York Rangers' navy shield third and the St. Louis Blues' '90s retro. Six outdoor-game sweaters are also still to be unveiled. The full list is in New NHL Jerseys 2026-27.

Did any NHL team change its home or road jersey for 2026-27?

No. No club announced a new home or road set. The only change to a primary sweater is the RBC patch replacing TD on the Vancouver Canucks' home jersey.

Which NHL team has the most jerseys in 2026-27?

The St. Louis Blues, with five: the blue home, the white road, the royal third, the '90s retro and the Hometown Remix. Carolina and Winnipeg also carry four or more looks.

Are the Hometown Remix jerseys included in these grades?

No. None of the 32 designs had been shown when we graded, so the rankings cover each team's home, road, third and confirmed throwback sweaters. We grade every Remix on our Hometown Remix tracker as it is revealed.
