Florida's New Spurrier Throwback Uniforms Are Beautiful, and the Helmet Is From the Wrong Year

Florida dropped a throwback on Monday night and it is the best-looking uniform any SEC program has revealed this offseason. Blue helmet, white jersey, white pants, orange and blue stripes, nothing else. The Gators are honoring the 60th anniversary of Steve Spurrier's 1966 Heisman Trophy season, and they got almost all of it right. The one thing they did not get right is the helmet, which is the piece everybody is posting.

What Florida Actually Revealed

The Gators posted the set on August 10, 2026 under the line "Retro unlocked," tying it to Spurrier's Heisman season. Here is the whole uniform:

• A royal blue helmet with an orange and white center stripe running front to back, a white oval on each side holding an orange block F outlined in blue, a gray facemask, and "Gators" in blue script on the front bumper.
• A white jersey with royal blue block numbers, blue-orange-blue stripes wrapping the shoulders, blue shoulder numbers, and FLORIDA in blue block letters across the nameplate.
• White pants with a matching blue-orange-blue stripe down the outseam.
• Jordan Brand throughout, with the Jumpman on the chest, the pants, and the gloves.

Head coach Jon Sumrall, who is a few weeks from his first game in Gainesville, was careful about the timeline when he was asked. "Long way off from actually wearing them, but I do think they're a cool tribute and such a cool look," he said. No game has been announced.

The Helmet Is From the Wrong Year

Here is the part nobody else is telling you. Spurrier did not wear a blue helmet in 1966.

Florida's 1966 helmet, the one he won the Heisman in, was white, with a blue block F on the sides and a blue-orange-blue stripe down the middle. It is arguably the most recognizable lid in program history, and Florida has already made a throwback out of it once, back in 2006.

The helmet Florida just revealed is a blue shell with an oval F and an orange and white stripe. Both of those pieces are real Gators history, they are just from the wrong side of 1966. Blue shells were Florida's standard in the seasons immediately before that year, and the oval F does not turn up until 1967, the season after the Heisman. The interlocking UF logo everyone associates with Florida did not arrive until 1968, so leaving it off was correct, and the school has been careful to describe the set as 1960s-inspired rather than a reproduction.

Does it matter? A little. If the entire premise of a uniform is a specific season, the helmet is the one piece that has to land, because the helmet is what people remember and what shows up in the highlight. Florida built a tribute to 1966 and put a 1963 shell and a 1967 logo on it.

We also think it is the more attractive answer. That is the honest tension here. The white-helmet 1966 set is more accurate and the blue-helmet version is better looking, because a blue shell against a white jersey gives you a two-tone silhouette from the stands while white-on-white flattens into one shape. Florida chose the picture over the paperwork. We would probably have done the same thing and just called it a 1960s throwback instead of pinning it to one season.

The Jersey Is the Best Part

Strip the helmet debate away and what is left is an extremely well-built uniform.

The shoulder striping is the star. Blue-orange-blue wrapping over the shoulder is the oldest trick in college football and it works here because the proportions are right, with the orange band thin enough to read as an accent instead of splitting the stripe in half. Modern jersey cuts have quietly killed this look at a lot of schools, because tailored sleeves leave no real estate for a stripe to sit on. Florida's version has enough shoulder to carry it.

The numbers are the other correct call. Solid royal blue block numerals with no outline, no shadow, and no gradient. Florida's current jerseys run a busier number treatment, and going bare here is what sells the era more than any single stripe does. Outlines are a modern invention on this uniform, and adding one would have been the easy mistake.

FLORIDA on the nameplate instead of a player name is period-accurate and also just looks better. The block lettering matches the numbers, the arch is shallow, and the whole back of the jersey reads clean.

The one modern intrusion we would fix is the helmet hardware. A mirrored visor and a contemporary shell shape fight the vintage read, and on a set this committed to 1960s minimalism the eye notices. That is a photo-shoot decision more than a uniform decision, and it will not follow the jersey onto the field.

When Florida Will Wear It

Florida has not named a game, and Sumrall's "long way off" suggests the staff is not treating it as an opening-week item.

The date that makes sense is Saturday, October 10, when Florida hosts South Carolina at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, and it has already been floated in coverage of the reveal as the likely homecoming debut. It is the Gators' only October home game, and the opponent is the program Spurrier coached for 11 seasons after he left Florida. A Spurrier tribute uniform against Spurrier's other team is the kind of alignment schools do not leave on the table. To be clear, that is reporting and our read of the schedule, not a team announcement.

The white jersey supports it too. Florida's other home dates are Florida Atlantic and Campbell in early September, Ole Miss on September 26, Oklahoma on November 7, and Vanderbilt on November 21. A white throwback fits a hot Gainesville afternoon better than a November night, and it does not conflict with the orange the Gators lean on for their biggest home games.

Our Grade: A-

This is a very good uniform. The stripes are proportioned correctly, the numbers are bare the way they should be, the nameplate is right, and the whole set has the confidence to leave things off, which is the hardest thing for a modern college program to do. Put it next to the rest of this offseason's reveals and it is comfortably at the top.

It lands at A- instead of higher for one reason, and it is the reason we led with. A uniform sold on a specific season should get that season's helmet. Florida had the better story available, the white shell that Spurrier actually won the Heisman in, and went with a handsomer shell from a different year. The design wins, the history loses a step, and the grade splits the difference.

The Bottom Line

Florida built the best throwback of the college football offseason and pinned it to the wrong helmet. The jersey, the pants, and the striping are as good as this kind of tribute gets, the oval F is a genuinely great mark, and a blue shell over a white jersey photographs better than the white-on-white original ever did. It just is not what Steve Spurrier wore in 1966, and when the whole pitch is 1966, that is a fair thing to point out.
