Here is the thing about gold uniforms: there are two very different golds, and programs pick the wrong one constantly. There is bright, saturated, almost yellow gold, which photographs loud and reads cheap under lights. The lid is our favorite part of the set. A gold shell with a white center stripe edged in black is a straightforward, almost old-fashioned combination, and it works because the white stripe gives your eye somewhere to land on an otherwise single-color helmet. That is the trap monochrome falls into, no contrast anywhere, and one stripe solves it.

The black facemask is the other correct call. A gold mask would have washed the front of the helmet into one flat shape; black draws the outline of the cage and gives the helmet structure from the front. And "VUFB" on the bumper instead of a wordmark is a nice piece of understatement from a program that has generally resisted shouting.

The one element we are not thrilled about is not really a design decision. The SRM Concrete patch is a white rectangle on a gold jersey, and a white box is the highest-contrast thing you can put on this base, which means the advertisement is one of the first things your eye finds. We have said before that we would always rather look at a jersey with no ad on it at all, and we said it about Ohio State's record jersey-patch deal too. Vanderbilt's version is small and tidy. It just happens to sit on the one background where a white patch cannot hide.

The pants carry the black side stripe down from the jersey, which keeps the silhouette from becoming one unbroken column of gold, and there is a subtle diamond-mesh texture at the collar that you will never see on television but is a nice piece of finishing.

We like this a lot more than we expected to. It is also just a pleasant thing to look at, which is not a small compliment for a monochrome uniform.

The grade lands at B+ for one reason: we have not seen it on a field. Gold is the least forgiving color on broadcast. It is the one that goes beige in afternoon sun, turns brown under warm stadium lights, and loses its edge against a green field, and every gold uniform we have graded has looked at least slightly different in motion than it did in the studio. Nothing about these photos suggests a problem. But "looks great in a dark studio" and "looks great in the fourth quarter" are two different tests, and this set has only passed one of them. Give us a game and this grade can move up.

The Bottom Line

Vanderbilt brought back old gold for the first time since 2020 and picked exactly the right shade to do it in.
