City Edition is reportedly done after this season. Nike and the NBA will replace the City Edition program with a new set of "Crafted" alternate uniforms starting in the 2027-28 season, according to a report first published by the Basketball Jersey Archive on October 30. Another uniform outlet said this week that its own sources confirmed it. Neither the NBA nor Nike has announced anything yet.

If it holds, the 2026-27 City Edition jerseys, which debut on January 14, 2027, are the last ones.

What We Know

  • What's changing: City Edition, the alternate uniform every NBA team has worn since Nike took over in 2017-18, is being replaced by a new category of alternates called "Crafted."
  • When: The 2027-28 season. The new uniforms are expected to be revealed in early fall 2027.
  • Who: All 30 teams, according to the original report.
  • What it looks like: No designs have leaked. The report describes a modern style, and the comparison being made is to the Specter Edition, the dark uniforms Nike gave the league's eight oldest franchises this season.
  • What's confirmed: Nothing official. This is a report from uniform outlets with inside sources. We will update this page when the NBA or Nike says something.

Why City Edition Is Ending

City Edition ran out of new ideas, and it showed. For eight seasons, each team got a brand new City design every year, some great (the Heat's Vice sets, the Spurs' Fiesta, the Bulls' flag jersey) and plenty forgettable. Then in 2025-26, every team brought back or remixed an old design instead of making a new one. In 2026-27, the program's 10th anniversary, it's the same idea again: every team is wearing a fan-favorite City Edition from the past, with a new iridescent swoosh.

Two straight years of reruns is how a uniform program ends. Calling the next one something else is the easiest way to start over.

What "Crafted" Might Look Like

The only clue so far is the Specter comparison. The Specter Edition uniforms for the Hawks, Celtics, Pistons, Warriors, Lakers, Knicks, 76ers and Kings are mostly black, with oversized graphics and small wordmarks and logos. They match the warmup gear those teams wear on the court, and they got a rough reception when they leaked. We graded all eight in our Specter Edition breakdown.

It's not clear yet whether Crafted is the Specter idea expanded to all 30 teams or a different direction entirely. If it's 30 teams in dark, graphic-heavy jerseys, expect the same backlash Specter got.

Our Take

Ending City Edition is the right call. Replacing it with 30 Specter clones would be the wrong one. The best City Editions worked because they were about the city: Miami's neon, San Antonio's Fiesta, Chicago's flag. The worst ones were generic patterns with a city name on top. If "Crafted" means each team gets something built around its own identity, it's an upgrade. If it means one dark template across the league, the NBA will miss City Edition more than it expects.

What It Means for This Season

Nothing changes in 2026-27. Every team still wears its City Edition, starting January 14, 2027, and the jerseys are expected in stores in January. Every design, ranked 30 to 1, is in our 2026-27 City Edition rankings, and the night each team wears its City Edition is in that team's uniform schedule, all linked from our NBA uniforms hub.
