2026 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs Scorebug Ranked: TNT Sports Wins, ESPN Second

TNT Sports · Stanley Cup Playoffs scorebug

The 2026 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs are split across two broadcast operations. ESPN, ESPN2, and ABC on the Disney side. TNT, TBS, and truTV under the unified TNT Sports banner. Two networks, two scorebugs. We graded both on identity, contrast, info density, and whether the broadcast actually feels like the playoffs.

How We Grade Playoff Scorebugs

Our letter scale comes down to four things: identity (does it feel like a playoff broadcast), contrast (does it read on screen), info density (is the Stanley Cup Playoffs branding present and clear), and atmosphere (does the package elevate the moment or feel like a regular-season carryover).

#2: ESPN

ESPN · ESPN2 · ABC · C+

ESPN · in-game scorebug

ESPN's scorebug is pretty boring, and we are being honest about it. The Stanley Cup icon is a nice touch and the right instinct, but it is small and only shows the top half of the trophy. The "EAST 1st ROUND - GAME 1" banner above the score adds context but does not scream playoffs the way "Stanley Cup Playoffs" would. Together, those two cues are the entirety of what signals a postseason game. The rest of the graphic is basically a regular-season layout with nothing else dressed up.

The game score reads fine. Team abbreviations and logos sit where you expect. Contrast is acceptable. But the whole package does not make us feel like we are watching a special game. For the Stanley Cup Playoffs, that is a problem. The broadcast should be hitting you with postseason atmosphere every time the scorebug is on screen. ESPN's version is doing the job and nothing more. C+.

#1: TNT Sports

TNT · TBS · truTV · B

TNT Sports · Stanley Cup Playoffs scorebug

TNT Sports' version is the better scorebug of Round 1. The color treatment on the Stanley Cup Playoffs banner is a real upgrade and reads instantly as postseason hockey. The whole Stanley Cup is shown instead of just the top half, which gives the graphic a silhouette moment ESPN does not have. The wordmark sits cleanly alongside the score and game information.

There is still something missing. TNT Sports has been running the NHL since 2021 and the broadcast language still feels like it is searching for the right tone. The scorebug does its job and leans into the playoff identity more than ESPN does, but the package as a whole does not yet feel definitive. This is a B rather than an A because there is room to grow. For now, TNT takes the top spot by being the network that actually commits to making the Stanley Cup Playoffs feel like the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

What We Miss: The NBC Era

NBC · 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs in-game scorebug

The biggest hole in this year's NHL broadcast presentation is that NBC is not here. NBC held the NHL national rights from 2005 through 2021 and the way that network presented the Stanley Cup Playoffs is still the gold standard. Look at the in-game scorebug above. "FIRST ROUND" sits at the top left. "CBJ LEAD SERIES 2-0" tells you the stakes of the game you are watching. The Stanley Cup Playoffs logo is locked in the right side of the bug with the year, not an afterthought. The whole graphic elevates the moment without cluttering the screen.

NBC · 2019 Stanley Cup Final pre-game broadcast graphic

The pre-game graphics packages told the same story. Team matchups rendered against the TD Garden skyline, the Stanley Cup centered between the two teams, the Final wordmark cut into the bottom of the frame. Everything about the NBC NHL era said "this is the Stanley Cup Playoffs and you should be watching."

TNT Sports is the closest thing to that energy now, and it is not quite there yet. The TNT scorebug is missing what NBC had built into the base graphic: series status baked into the bug so every viewer tuning in mid-game knew exactly where the series stood. ESPN is further behind. The league is still waiting on a network to build the next definitive NHL playoff broadcast language, and neither is doing it in 2026.

Final Ranking

Network Grade
TNT Sports (TNT · TBS · truTV) B
ESPN (ESPN · ESPN2 · ABC) C+

TNT Sports takes the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs scorebug ranking with a B. ESPN lands second at a C+. Neither network has built the definitive NHL playoff presentation yet. The 2026 Stanley Cup Final airs on ABC in the fifth year of the current rights deal, so Round 2 and beyond will continue to deliver this same pair of scorebugs until the Final flips to ABC's presentation.
