Every Pittsburgh Pirates Jersey in 2026, Ranked: The Road Grays Win and the New City Connect Lands With a Thud

ColorWay Sports·

Black and gold is one of the best colour combinations in American sport, and Pittsburgh is the only city that owns it outright across three teams. That should make the Pirates closet easy. Instead it produces a ranking where the two most ordinary jerseys finish on top and the loudest, newest, most-promoted uniform finishes last. The reason is a single design decision the team made twice, once brilliantly and once badly. Here is every Pittsburgh Pirates jersey and uniform for 2026, ranked worst to first and graded.

4. City Connect

The headline addition of the Pirates' 2026 season, debuted on Friday, April 17 against the Rays, and now the standing uniform for every Friday home game at PNC Park. It is a full reset from the bright yellow "PGH" kit worn from 2023 through 2025. This one goes all black from cap to pants, with gold carrying the load and small hits of red. "Pirates" runs across the chest in a heavy gothic typeface meant to echo the lettering and steelwork of the city's bridges, and it ships with two caps, a gold crown with a black brim and the inverse, both carrying a Jolly Roger with crossed swords.

It grades a C, and the disappointment is real because the ingredients were all there. The bridge-gothic concept is a genuinely good idea and a clear upgrade on abbreviating your own city to "PGH." The problem is that it went all black and then kept going. Black cap, black jersey, black pants, with gold reduced to outlining rather than doing anything. The result reads closer to a generic blackout alternate than to Pittsburgh, and the gothic lettering, which should be the star, gets swallowed by the base it sits on. There is a version of this uniform with gold pants or a gold crown as standard that would rank near the top of this list. The version they built is the one jersey in the closet that makes you look away.

3. Black Alternate

ColorWay Sports Grade
B

The black alternate is the most popular shirt in the closet and the one with the best story attached. It carries the same retro cursive "Pittsburgh" as the road grays, rendered in gold on a black base, and it arrived in January 2020 as part of the same "the script is back" refresh. There is no fixed day for it. It is the jersey the Pirates reach for when they want the full black and gold, home or away, and Paul Skenes has made no secret of loving it, which is why it turns up on his starts often enough that fans set their watches by it. We wrote about why the starting pitcher usually picks the uniform using exactly this example.

It grades a B. Gold cursive on black is a genuinely strong combination and it photographs beautifully under the lights. What holds it back is the same instinct that sinks the City Connect: the Pirates cannot resist blacking everything out, and the black cap and dark pants leave the gold script stranded with nothing to answer it. It is a very good jersey inside a uniform that could use one more piece of colour. That it still lands third says more about the two above it than about any real flaw here.

2. Home White Pinstripes

ColorWay Sports Grade
B+

The home white is the Pirates' default and the look most people picture when they picture this team: a white base laced with thin black-and-gold pinstripes, "Pirates" scripted across the chest, and the black cap with the gold "P." It takes essentially every home date the Friday City Connect does not claim.

It grades a B+, and the pinstripes are why. They are the detail that separates this from every other home white in the National League, thin enough that they read as texture rather than decoration, and carrying both team colours at once so the uniform never needs to shout. This is the rare classic that would be actively worse with any additions. The Pirates have been smart enough to leave it almost entirely alone for years, and on a list where the newest jersey finishes last, the one they have barely touched finishes near the top. That is not a coincidence.

1. Road Grays

ColorWay Sports Grade
B+

On the road Pittsburgh wears a standard gray set with the cursive "Pittsburgh" arched across the chest, paired with the black cap and gold "P." The script has a genuinely good origin story: it ran on the road jerseys from 1990 through 2000, got replaced by a blocky capitalised treatment for nineteen years, and came back in 2020 because fans never stopped asking for it. It has been the road default ever since.

It grades a B+ and takes the top spot on the strength of that wordmark. Cursive city names are the warmest thing in baseball typography and almost nobody runs one anymore, so the Pirates own a look most of the league gave up. It edges the pinstripes because it is the jersey that had to be argued for. Somebody at that club listened to supporters, admitted the previous version was worse, and put the old script back on the field, which is the exact opposite of the instinct that produced the City Connect. The best thing the Pirates wear is a jersey they were talked into.

The Bottom Line on the Pirates Jersey Rankings

This is a four-jersey closet with a very clear lesson buried in it, and the ranking order tells it better than we could.

The two best things the Pirates own are the two they interfered with least. The road grays win because the club listened to its fans and put back a cursive script it never should have removed. The pinstripes finish second because nobody has been allowed to touch them. Neither is flashy and neither is trying to be.

The black alternate sits third with the best colour combination of the four and a jersey players genuinely want to wear, held back only by a uniform around it that keeps going darker instead of letting the gold breathe.

Then the City Connect, the newest and loudest piece, finishes last at a C. Not because the idea was bad, because the bridge-gothic wordmark is a real one, but because they took the best colour pairing in the city and buried it under an all-black uniform. Pittsburgh already knows what its best look is. It is on the field every road trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best Pirates jersey for 2026?

We rank the road grays No. 1 with a B+. They carry the cursive "Pittsburgh" script that ran from 1990 to 2000 and was brought back in 2020 after years of fan demand, paired with the black cap and gold "P." The home white pinstripes are a very close second, also at a B+.

How many uniforms do the Pirates have in 2026?

Four: the home white pinstripes, the road grays with the cursive "Pittsburgh" script, the black alternate, and the new black-and-gold City Connect.

What is the new Pirates City Connect uniform?

An all-black kit that debuted April 17, 2026 against the Rays, replacing the yellow "PGH" set worn from 2023 through 2025. It puts "Pirates" across the chest in a gothic typeface inspired by the city's bridge lettering and steelwork, with two cap options carrying a Jolly Roger and crossed swords. We grade it a C, our lowest Pirates mark, because the all-black execution smothers the gold.

Why do the Pirates wear black jerseys when Paul Skenes pitches?

Because the starting pitcher usually picks the uniform. Skenes favours the black alternate, so it turns up on his starts far more often than chance would explain. It is one of the most visible examples of a leaguewide habit we broke down in who picks MLB uniforms each game.

When do the Pirates wear their City Connect?

Every Friday home game at PNC Park. It is the only fixed day-of-week slot in the Pirates rotation, which otherwise runs on feel.
