What If the Browns Put a Logo on Their Helmet? Why the Plain Orange Shell Must Never Change

Thirty-one NFL teams put something on the side of the helmet. The Browns put nothing. Orange shell, a brown and white stripe down the middle, and that's it. Every year somebody asks if Cleveland should finally add a logo.

So let's do it. What if the Browns put a logo on the helmet? This Sunday's Week 8 game at Pittsburgh is the perfect backdrop: the Browns' blank helmet against the Steelers' logo on one side only, the two strangest helmets in football on the same field. We argued the Steelers side in what if the Steelers put their logo on both sides.

To be clear, this is a hypothetical. The Browns have not announced any change, and nothing suggests they're considering one. Our answer, up front: never.

Quick Answers

  • Do the Browns have a logo on their helmet? No. They're the only NFL team without one, the Associated Press noted in 2023.
  • Have they ever had one? Not in a game. Browns history has no photos of a logo on the helmet, and the famous "CB" helmet was never worn.
  • What is the Browns logo? The orange helmet itself. The team calls the helmet its main logo, and has since 1970.
  • Did the 2015 rebrand add one? No. The Browns made the orange brighter, added a brown facemask and kept the shell blank.
  • Our verdict: the blank shell is the logo. Adding anything makes it worse.

How the Browns Ended Up With a Blank Helmet

The Browns started in plain white helmets and wore them for their first six seasons, the AP says, before switching to orange in the early 1950s. They never added a logo after that. They tried player numbers on the side in the late 1950s, then took them off. The stripe has done all the work since. We went deeper on that in NFL uniform mysteries, explained.

The "CB" myth. You may have seen a Browns helmet with "CB" on the side, dated 1965. Cleveland Scene dug into it and found no evidence it was ever worn in a game. The team says the same.

The 2015 non-change. When the Browns refreshed their look in 2015, some expected a real helmet logo. Instead the team made the orange brighter and added a brown facemask, Sports Illustrated reported. The team's release called the orange helmet its main logo since 1970, and CBS Sports' headline said it best: orange helmet replaces orange helmet.

That joke is actually the whole point. The Browns' logo is the helmet.

The Candidates: Every Logo the Browns Could Use

If Cleveland ever did it, these are the options. We graded every one.

Browns logos, from the never-worn "CB" to the helmet logo used today.

Brownie the Elf. The elf goes back to the team's start in 1946, and fans voted him onto the midfield logo in 2022, NFL.com reported. He works at midfield. On a helmet, a cartoon elf in a hat is a mascot, not a mark. Put him on the side of a shell and the Browns become the cutest helmet in the league. That's not what anyone in Cleveland wants. Grade: F.

The Dawg. The dog head is the Browns' alternate logo and a fan favorite thanks to the Dawg Pound. It's the closest thing to a real option. But it's a busy, detailed drawing, and from the upper deck it turns into an orange-and-brown smudge. It would also make the Browns look like every other animal-logo team. Grade: D.

A "B" or "CB." A letter is clean and it reads from far away. It's also generic. Plenty of teams use a B. And the only letter logo in Browns history is the one they never wore. Grade: D-minus.

Player numbers. The Browns tried them in the late 1950s and dropped them. Numbers on the side are a throwback detail, not a logo. Fine for a one-game tribute, wrong for full time. Grade: C.

Nothing. The orange shell and the stripe. Unmistakable from any angle, in any stadium, from any seat. Grade: A-plus.

Why Blank Wins

It's the only one. Every other NFL team has a helmet logo. Only the Browns have a helmet that is its own logo. You can't copy that, and once it's gone you can't get it back.

It's tougher. A blank orange helmet says the Browns don't need decoration. It fits a city that likes its football plain and physical. That's not marketing talk. It's why the helmet debate never ends with a change.

It already works with everything. Look at what the Browns wear now: the brown home jersey, the white road jersey and the all-brown Alpha Dawg set. The plain orange helmet sits on top of all three and never fights with any of them.

The white helmet already gave them their change. When the NFL allowed alternate helmets again, the Browns didn't add a logo. They went back in time. In 2023 they brought out a white throwback helmet, the first white helmet the team had worn since 1951, starting with a Monday night game against Pittsburgh. Still no logo. That tells you what the people running the team think.

The Case for a Logo (and Why It Fails)

The best argument goes like this: the Browns have the most loyal fan base in the league and some of the plainest branding, and a logo would sell more hats, more helmets and more jerseys.

It's a weak argument. The Browns already sell plenty, and the orange helmet already shows up on hats and shirts as the logo itself. A logo on the helmet doesn't add a product. It just turns the most distinctive thing the franchise owns into an ordinary one.

The other argument is that it looks unfinished. That's taste, and our taste says the opposite. A blank helmet only looks unfinished if you've never seen it on a field. Watch the Browns walk out of the tunnel in all brown under orange shells and tell us it needs an elf.

Our Verdict

No logo. Ever. Not the elf, not the dog, not a letter. The Browns already have the best logo in the NFL. It just happens to be a helmet.

Browns fans, you're the ones who'd have to live with it. Would you ever take a logo? Which one? Tell us we're wrong.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why don't the Browns have a logo on their helmet?

They never added one. The Browns started in plain white helmets, moved to orange in the early 1950s and kept the shell blank except for the center stripe. Over time the plain helmet became the team's identity, and the team has used the helmet as its main logo since 1970.

Are the Browns the only NFL team without a helmet logo?

Yes. Every other NFL team has a logo, letter or design on the side of its helmet.

Have the Browns ever had a logo on their helmet?

Not in a game, as far as anyone has found. A "CB" helmet logo dated to 1965 appears in some histories, but there's no evidence it was ever worn on the field.

What is the Browns' logo?

The orange helmet. The Browns call it their main logo since 1970, and they refreshed it in 2015 with a brighter orange. Brownie the Elf and the dog head are secondary marks.

When did the Browns get orange helmets?

In the early 1950s, after the team's white-helmet start. Sources differ on the exact season: some say 1950 and the AP says 1952.

Did the Browns add a helmet logo in their 2015 rebrand?

No. Some expected one, but the Browns only brightened the orange and added a brown facemask. The helmet stayed blank.

Do the Browns have a white helmet?

Yes. The Browns introduced a white throwback helmet in 2023, their first white helmet since 1951. It also has no logo.

What is Brownie the Elf?

The Browns' original mascot from 1946. Fans voted him onto the midfield logo at the team's stadium in 2022.

Will the Browns ever add a helmet logo?

There's no sign of it. This story is a hypothetical, and the team has never announced plans to add one.
