We are glad they did this. After a stretch of Bayern home shirts chasing novelty, this is a straightforward deep red with subtle vertical pinstripes and gold trim, and it looks like Bayern Munich.

The gold works here for the same reason it works on Chelsea's blue and fails on Juventus's white: it is sitting on a dark base with plenty of contrast. The title badge is a nice touch and correctly small.

Why only a B rather than higher? Because safe is not the same as excellent. There is nothing here you will remember in three years, and for a club of this size a classic done competently is the baseline rather than an achievement.

Footy Headlines called this their best change kit in years, and the crest revival genuinely is a lovely piece of archive work. Bringing back the e.V. badge after a quarter of a century is the kind of detail that means something to the people who notice it.

Our issue is simpler and harder to get past: it looks a lot like Real Madrid's home shirt. White with dark trim and a navy collar is not a Bayern silhouette, and when the two shirts are side by side in a Champions League group stage that is going to be a problem.

The graphic hides four moments: Franz Beckenbauer's European triumphs, Oliver Kahn's penalty save in Milan in 2001, Patrik Andersson's title-clinching free kick from the same year, and Arjen Robben's winner in the 2013 Champions League final. You will not find any of them from the stands, and adidas know that, so the concept is for the person holding the shirt rather than the person watching the match.

Judge it as a shirt, then. A marbled purple base with hot red accents is a strong pairing, the red stripes on the shoulders give it an edge the marbling alone would lack, and it is the first navy third Bayern have worn since 2019/20, a colour supporters have kept asking for. It is busy, but it is busy in one direction, which is the difference between a pattern and a mess. Comfortably the most interesting of the three, and a better shirt than the away.
