Dortmund's 2026/27 Kits: The Purple Third Shirt, Graded

ColorWay Sports·

Dortmund are the most consistent club in our European ranking, with both graded kits landing at exactly the same level. They are also one of only two clubs anywhere with a third kit actually released, and it turned out to be one of the more interesting shirts of the season.

What Does Borussia Dortmund's 2026/27 Home Kit Look Like?

Yellow with a tonal graphic across the front and lower body drawn from the steel framework of the Minister Stein colliery and the Dortmunder U-Tower.

Simple with a pop, which is the whole brief for a Dortmund home shirt.

What separates this from the other concept-driven kits that struggled this season is that the reference is specific to the city rather than being generic heritage filler. The Minister Stein colliery and the U-Tower are real Dortmund landmarks, and the steel framework translates into a pattern that reads as texture on yellow instead of fighting it.

Yellow is a difficult base. It goes flat under floodlights and it shows every graphic decision you make. Keeping the pattern tonal was the right restraint.

Grade: B+

What Does Borussia Dortmund's 2026/27 Third Kit Look Like?

Purple with neon yellow collar trim and yellow PUMA logos, released July 30 under the line "Shine different."

It reads a little like a goalkeeper shirt, which is usually a criticism and here somehow is not.

Dortmund went somewhere genuinely unusual. Purple has no history at the club and no obvious justification, and normally that is exactly what we mark a shirt down for. The difference is that this does not pretend otherwise. It is not dressed up as a heritage nod or a hidden pattern with a story. It is just a good purple shirt with excellent neon yellow trim.

Given only two third kits in the whole of Europe actually launched, one of them being this interesting is a small gift.

Grade: B+

The Third Shirt: Not Yet Released

Dortmund's away kit has not launched. Leaked images point to a dark anthracite base with an abstract lightning pattern, which would make it the most aggressive of the three. We do not grade a shirt until the club releases it, and we will update this post when it lands.

Only Two Third Kits In Europe Have Launched

Worth putting Dortmund's third shirt in context. Of the fifteen biggest clubs in Europe, exactly two have released a third kit for 2026/27: Dortmund and Arsenal. The other thirteen are either leaks or unannounced.

That makes Dortmund's the joint-earliest look at what clubs are doing with the slot where they have the most freedom, and the answer here was a colour with no connection to the club at all. On the evidence, that was the right gamble.

Who Makes Borussia Dortmund's Kits?

PUMA, who have supplied Borussia Dortmund since 2012.

The Bottom Line

Dortmund's home shirt is a B+ built on a tonal pattern taken from the Minister Stein colliery steelwork and the Dortmunder U-Tower, and their purple third, one of only two released in Europe, matches it at B+. The anthracite away is still unreleased. Wardrobe grade: B+.
