Dortmund went somewhere genuinely unusual. Purple has no history at the club and no obvious justification, and normally that is exactly what we mark a shirt down for. The difference is that this does not pretend otherwise. It is not dressed up as a heritage nod or a hidden pattern with a story. It is just a good purple shirt with excellent neon yellow trim.

It was one of the first two third kits in Europe to launch, and one of the first being this interesting set the bar for the rest.

A black away shirt is the safest call in football, so it has to earn its place, and this one does. The bolts give a dark shirt some movement without turning it into a graphic, the white at the neck and cuffs keep it from reading as a training top, and the yellow crest does all the identity work on its own, which is exactly what a Dortmund crest is for.

It is not as brave as the purple third and it was never going to be. As black change kits go it is one of the better ones this season, and it slots into the wardrobe without dragging anything down.

Worth putting Dortmund's third shirt in context. When it launched on July 30, exactly two of Europe's fifteen biggest clubs had released a third kit for 2026/27: Dortmund and Arsenal. Twelve of the fifteen have now, with only Chelsea, Inter and Paris Saint-Germain still to come.
