The Atlanta Braves wore their navy alternate jersey in Game 2 of the NLDS at Dodger Stadium on Sunday, October 4, and beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-2. The series is tied 1-1 and moves to Truist Park for Game 3 on Tuesday.
It was a change from Game 1. On Saturday, Atlanta wore the standard road gray uniform with the red "Atlanta" script and lost 5-3. On Sunday, in 95-degree heat in Los Angeles, the Braves came out in navy over the road gray pants with the all-navy cap, and the Dodgers stayed in their home whites with the blue cap.
So now the question every Braves fan is asking: was that a one-game switch, or is navy the October jersey now?
From Our Seats: The Braves Navy Jersey in Person
We were at Dodger Stadium for Game 2. This is Ronald Acuña Jr. leading off in the navy alternate, red "13" on the back, gray road pants below.
Jake's Take
I'm a Dodger fan, and I'll say it: I love the Braves navy jersey. In person, the red "Atlanta" script on navy looks even better than it does on TV. Atlanta has some of the nicest jerseys in baseball.
What the Braves Wore in NLDS Game 2
The navy alternate is the same idea as the road gray, flipped onto a dark base. The red "Atlanta" script with a white outline runs across the chest, the tomahawk sits underneath it, and red piping runs down the placket and around the sleeves. In Game 2 it went over the road gray pants, with the all-navy road cap.
The Dodgers did what the Dodgers do at home in October: the white jersey with the blue "Dodgers" script, the red number on the front and the blue cap. That is one of the most fixed looks in the sport, and it does not change.
That leaves the visiting team to decide what the matchup looks like, and Atlanta chose dark against white instead of gray against white.
How the Navy Jersey Looks Against Dodger White
Navy against white is the cleanest contrast a road team can bring to Dodger Stadium. On a broadcast, there is never a question about who is who, and the red script on navy pops more than it does on gray.
The problem is below the belt. The navy top over gray pants makes Atlanta look like it is wearing two different uniforms, a dark jersey and a road gray bottom that do not belong to the same set. The road gray uniform, top to bottom, is one complete look, and against Dodger white it is two of the most classic uniforms in baseball sharing a field. We graded that Game 1 matchup an A- in our MLB uniform tracker. The navy version matches it.
The Braves' Record in the Navy Alternate
Our tracker has logged every Braves game since July 8, all 77 of them, and Atlanta has worn the navy alternate 11 times in that stretch. Every one of those 11 was a road game. The earliest sighting we have from this season, a Wednesday game at San Diego on June 24, was on the road too.
Here is how Atlanta has done in navy since July 8:
That is 5-6 overall, and it splits into two very different halves. Atlanta lost the first five games it wore navy in our tracker, then won five of the last six, including a three-game sweep in Houston and Sunday's win in Los Angeles.
For comparison, the Braves are 13-14 in the road gray uniform over the same stretch, counting the Game 1 loss. So the jersey has not been a lucky charm over the full sample. It has been a hot one lately.
The Dodger Stadium Crowd in Game 2
The Dodgers were in their home whites, the same set they wear every home game in October. Here are Teoscar Hernández (37) and Kiké Hernández (8) on the top step of the dugout.
Atlanta led 3-1 after seven innings. That is when a lot of the crowd started heading for the exits.
Jake's Take
I'm a Los Angeles sports fan: Lakers, Dodgers and, unfortunately, the Chargers. LA fans, me included, are extremely spoiled. You won't see the atmosphere you get at a Brewers or Padres game, where the crowd is into it the whole game, up or down, and actually gives the team momentum.
In LA, especially with the Lakers and Dodgers, it works the other way around. The team gives the crowd momentum. When things are going well, we're some of the loudest fans in the world. When they're not, the building goes quiet, and it can be embarrassing.
Watching Dodgers fans leave in the 8th inning, down two runs, in an NLDS game in a best-of-five series, was embarrassing.
The ones who left missed the Dodgers scoring in the 9th to pull within a run before Atlanta closed it out, 3-2.
Should the Braves Wear Navy for the Rest of the NLDS?
Not in Atlanta. Games 3 and 4 are at Truist Park, and the navy has been a road jersey all season. At home, the Braves wear the home whites or the red alternate, and the red already has an October moment: Atlanta wore it over home white pants to close out the Phillies 6-2 in Game 3 of the Wild Card Series, a matchup we graded an A-. The Braves are 5-1 at home in the red alternate since July 8. If they want a change from white for Game 3, the red is the one.
If the series goes to a Game 5 at Dodger Stadium on Friday, October 9, our pick is the navy again. It won Game 2, it is 5-1 in its last six, and against Dodger white it is the best look Atlanta has. The road gray is a great uniform too, but the navy has earned another night in Los Angeles.
ColorWay Sports Grade
A-
Braves Navy Alternate vs Dodgers Home White · NLDS Game 2
Our grade for the Game 2 uniform matchup is an A-, the same as the road grays in Game 1. The contrast against Dodger white is excellent and the red script reads better on navy than anywhere else in the closet. The gray pants are the only thing keeping it out of the A range.

The Braves wore the navy alternate jersey over road gray pants in NLDS Game 2 at Dodger Stadium and beat the Dodgers 3-2 to tie the series 1-1. It is 5-6 in our tracker since July 8, with five wins in its last six. We grade the matchup an A-: great contrast, a small knock for the gray pants, and a jersey that looked even better from the seats than on TV.
