No. 2 Duke opened its season on Monday night by beating Army 84-50 at Cameron Indoor Stadium, and it did it in the best jersey in its closet: the gray one with the royal blue and gold trim. Dame Sarr led Duke with 16 points. The jersey led everything else.
What Duke's Gray Jersey Looks Like
The base is a light gray. "DUKE" arches across the chest in Duke's royal blue block letters, with the number underneath in the same blue. The collar and armholes carry the trim that makes it: a stripe of royal blue, then a stripe of metallic gold, then royal blue again. The same blue and gold stripe runs down each side. Even the tag inside the neck is gold.
Gold is not a Duke color. It shows up here on purpose.
Why Duke Wears It Against Army
Duke has described this as a Coach K-inspired gray jersey trimmed in gold, a tribute to Mike Krzyzewski's run as head coach of the U.S. national team, where he won Olympic gold in 2008, 2012 and 2016. The gold trim is the medals.
The Army connection runs deeper. Krzyzewski graduated from West Point in 1969, played for Bob Knight there and was Army's head coach before he came to Duke in 1980. So the gray jersey has become the one Duke pulls out for Army and for Coach K tributes. Monday's opener was both: Army in the building, and the coach who connects the two programs on everyone's mind.
Our Grade: B+
Up close, this is an A. The detail shots Duke posted are some of the best jersey photos of the season. The gold stripe between two blues is the kind of trim you only notice in person, and it makes a plain gray jersey look expensive.
On the broadcast, it loses a step. Light gray does not pop under arena lights the way Duke's royal blue or even the classic white does, and from the TV angle the gold trim mostly disappears into the blue. You have to be close to get what makes it special.
So it lands at B+. A great jersey that is better on a hanger than on a camera. If Duke ever went one step bolder, with gold outlines on the letters and numbers instead of just the trim, it would be an A from every distance.
How It Compares to the Rest of Duke's Closet
Duke's regular rotation is the white home jersey, the royal blue, and the black alternate. The gray is the special one. It comes out once in a while, which is part of why it lands every time. On the football side, our Duke uniform schedule tracks every look week by week.
