What Color Are the Cowboys' Pants? Silver, Blue or Green: The Answer, and Why Nothing Matches

Ask ten Cowboys fans what color the home pants are and you'll get three answers: silver, blue and green. They're all a little bit right. The pants Dallas wears with its white jersey are a metallic color that looks silver in person, blue under stadium lights and, on an HD broadcast, unmistakably green.

So what color are the Cowboys' pants, really? Here's the answer, where the color came from, why nothing on the Dallas uniform matches, and our take on whether they should fix it. (They shouldn't.)

Quick Answers

  • What color are the Cowboys' home pants? A metallic silver with a green-blue tint. It's widely listed as "metallic silver-green," and ESPN's weekly NFL uniform guide simply calls it "silver green." The team's longtime equipment director has called it "Cowboys Star Blue."
  • Are the Cowboys' pants green? On TV, often yes. In person they read silver-blue. The tint is real, and HD broadcasts show it more than old TV did.
  • Where did the color come from? Tex Schramm, the team's founding president, saw a car with that color interior and fell in love with it, according to equipment director Mike McCord.
  • Do the Cowboys' helmet and pants match? No. The helmet is a metallic silver-blue, the home pants are the green-tinted silver and the road pants are a flatter silver.
  • Do the Cowboys' blues match? No. The home white jersey is trimmed in royal blue, the road jersey and helmet logo are navy.
  • Our take: the mismatch is the look. Never fix it.

Where the Cowboys' Pants Color Came From

The best explanation comes from the man who has handled the uniforms for decades. Cowboys equipment director Mike McCord told FOX Sports in 2017 that the color "originated with Tex Schramm," who "saw a car with that color interior and fell in love with it."

According to McCord, the pants were a truer gray through most of the 1970s, and the current shade was matched in the late '70s and early '80s, when Russell made the uniforms. He called the color "Cowboys Star Blue." When the NFL's uniform deal moved to Nike in 2012, he said, the color "popped even more as a turquoise, blueish gray."

So the honest answer to "what color are the Cowboys' pants" is: a custom color built to look like the inside of a car Tex Schramm liked. There isn't a plain-English name for it, which is why everyone calls it something different.

Why the Cowboys' Pants Look Green on TV

The pants were meant to read as silver on a broadcast. Then TV got sharper.

Back in 2010, NBC DFW reported, based on a Dallas Observer story, that the Cowboys were looking at the problem. HD showed the green in the pants, and the team's merchandising vice president, Bill Priakos, said the picture was "too realistic." The team said it was experimenting with different shades.

Nothing changed. Sixteen years later the pants are still the same green-tinted silver, and HD is now 4K. McCord's view in 2017 was that HD made the color "more true to what you see on TV," meaning the green you see on your screen is the real color, not a glitch.

Why Nothing on the Cowboys Uniform Matches

The pants are only half of it. Look at a Cowboys player in the home whites and count the colors:

  • The helmet: metallic silver-blue, with a navy star.
  • The home pants: the green-tinted silver.
  • The road pants: a flatter, pearl-like silver that goes with the navy jersey.
  • The home jersey trim: royal blue.
  • The road jersey: navy.

That's two blues and three silvers on one team. Uni Watch's Paul Lukas made the case against it in a 2007 ESPN column, saying the helmet's navy and the home set's royal "clash," and that Dallas should "pick one silver and stick with it."

The blue split has a business reason. McCord told FOX Sports that "navy has been more popular in retail," which is why the dark jersey and most of the merchandise moved to navy, while the white home set kept its royal trim. The Cowboys wear white at home because Schramm wanted Dallas fans to see opponents' colors. We explain that one in NFL uniform mysteries, explained.

Should the Cowboys Fix It? No.

Here's the take: the mismatch is the Cowboys' look, and fixing it would make it worse.

Every "clean" version of the Cowboys uniform already exists, and none of them is better. The Thanksgiving Classic has a white helmet and white pants, and it's great, but it's great because it's different once a year. The all-white Arctic White Color Rush matches top to bottom, and it works for three nights a year because it's a change of pace, not the identity. Make the home pants plain silver to match the helmet and the Cowboys become every other silver team in football.

That green-tinted silver is the one color nobody else in the NFL wears. You can spot a Cowboys game from across a sports bar because of it. A team that has been called "America's Team" since the 1970s doesn't need to match. It needs to look like the Cowboys, and the pants that don't match anything are a big part of how it does that.

The NFL's own style guide once showed royal stripes on the silver pants in 2023, and fans thought a change was coming. The team called it human error, KRLD reported, and nothing changed. Good.

When the Cowboys Wear Which Pants in 2026

The green-tinted silver pants go with the white jersey, which Dallas wears in 10 of its 17 games this season. The navy jersey goes with the flatter silver pants, three road games, including Week 9 at the Colts on November 8. The Thanksgiving Classic on November 26 against the Eagles has white pants, and the all-white Color Rush has white pants too. Every date is in the Cowboys 2026 uniform schedule, and we rank all four looks in every Cowboys jersey, ranked.

The Bottom Line

The Cowboys' home pants are a custom metallic silver with a green-blue tint, picked by Tex Schramm after a car interior caught his eye. In person they look silver-blue. On TV they look green. They don't match the helmet, the road pants or either of the team's blues, and they never have. That's not a mistake to fix. It's the most recognizable pair of pants in the NFL.

Frequently Asked Questions

What color are the Dallas Cowboys' pants?

The home pants, worn with the white jersey, are a metallic silver with a green-blue tint, widely listed as "metallic silver-green." They look silver-blue in person and green on many TV broadcasts. The road pants worn with the navy jersey are a flatter silver.

Why are the Cowboys' pants green?

The color was chosen to look silver, but it has a green-blue tint built in. Cowboys equipment director Mike McCord said it came from Tex Schramm, who saw a car with that color interior and loved it. HD broadcasts show the green more clearly than older TV did.

Why don't the Cowboys' helmet and pants match?

They're different colors on purpose. The helmet is a metallic silver-blue, while the home pants are the green-tinted silver Tex Schramm picked. The team has kept both for decades, even after talk of changing the pants shade in 2010.

Why do the Cowboys have two different blues?

The white home jersey is trimmed in royal blue, while the road jersey and the helmet star are navy. Equipment director Mike McCord said navy became the main dark color because it was more popular in retail.

What do the Cowboys call their pants color?

McCord called it "Cowboys Star Blue" in a 2017 interview. ESPN's weekly NFL uniform guide lists it as "silver green," and most color references list it as metallic silver-green.

Have the Cowboys ever changed the pants color?

Not the current shade, as far as anyone has reported. The pants were a truer gray through most of the 1970s before the current color was matched in the late '70s and early '80s. In 2010 the team said it was experimenting with shades because HD made the pants look green, but no change was made.

Why do the Cowboys wear white at home?

Tex Schramm wanted Dallas fans to see opposing teams' colors, so the Cowboys made white their home jersey in the 1960s, the reverse of most NFL teams. The idea of a "blue jersey curse" came later. Full story in NFL uniform mysteries, explained.

When do the Cowboys wear the silver-green pants in 2026?

Every time they wear the white jersey, which is 10 of their 17 games. The navy jersey uses a flatter silver pant, and the Thanksgiving Classic and all-white Color Rush both use white pants. See the Cowboys 2026 uniform schedule.
