One NFL team wears white at home eight times this season. If you guessed the Dallas Cowboys, you are right, and it is not close. We went through all 272 home games on the 2026 NFL schedule, team by team, using our 32 team uniform schedules and the games we have already logged on the 2026 NFL uniform tracker. The answer to "which NFL teams wear white at home" is: fewer than you think, and mostly in the South.
Here is what the count found. Fifteen of the 32 teams wear a white jersey at home at least once in 2026. Sixteen never do. Across the whole league, it adds up to 36 white home games out of 272, about 13 percent, and the Cowboys alone account for almost a quarter of them. Fifteen of those 36 have already been worn.
This is the football version of our story on why NBA teams don't wear white at home anymore. In basketball, the old "home team wears white" rule died because of jersey sales. In football, the rule never really existed in the first place: the home team picks, most teams pick color, and a handful pick white for reasons that go back decades.
The Short Answer
- Dallas Cowboys: 8 white home games. Every one of them comes from the team's own published schedule. The only home game in color is the Thanksgiving Classic, a navy throwback.
- Miami Dolphins: 6. Two worn, two announced (including the white throwback against Chicago on December 13), and two more that are our projection.
- Tampa Bay Buccaneers: 5. Four already worn, the most of any team so far, plus one more projected.
- Five teams with 2: the Texans, Saints, Jets, Rams and Bengals.
- Seven teams with 1: the Ravens, Commanders, Cardinals, Bills, Colts, Vikings and Giants.
- Sixteen teams with 0, plus the Bears, whose one possible white home game is still unconfirmed.
Every NFL Team's White Home Games in 2026
How we counted: a white home game is any game where the team is the designated home team and wears a white jersey, including white alternates, white throwbacks and all-white Color Rush and Rivalries sets. International games count for the designated home team, so the Cowboys' Week 3 game in Rio de Janeiro is a Dallas home game. Worn means the game has been played and the jersey is confirmed on our tracker (Weeks 1 through 6, plus Thursday night of Week 7). Still to come is the team's own announced plan unless it says projected, which means the team has not named a jersey for that date and the call is ours, from the team's schedule page. Anything we could not pin down is marked TBA and not counted. Click any team for its full game-by-game uniform schedule.

Counts as of October 23, 2026. Projected games can change if a team announces something different, and we will update this page when they do.
1. Dallas Cowboys: 8 White Home Games
The Cowboys published their full 2026 uniform schedule on September 2, and it is the most white-heavy plan in the league. Six home games in the standard white jersey, two more in the all-white Arctic White Color Rush, and one home game in color: the Thanksgiving Classic against Philadelphia on November 26, a navy 1960s throwback with a white helmet. Three of the eight have already been worn, the Color Rush against Washington in Week 2, the Rio de Janeiro game against Baltimore in Week 3, and Tampa Bay on Thursday night in Week 5.

Why do the Cowboys wear white at home? It goes back to Tex Schramm, the club's original president and general manager. Sports Illustrated's Cowboys site reported that Schramm adopted white at home mainly so Dallas fans would get to see the visiting teams in their own colors, every week, at a time when most fans could not see those teams any other way. The heat was part of it too. Mike McCord, the Cowboys' longtime equipment director, told Fox Sports in 2017 that white at home "started with the heat, especially at Texas Stadium," where dark jerseys baked on the sideline.
What it is not about is the famous "blue jersey curse." The white-at-home tradition started long before Dallas won anything, and SI notes that Schramm told the New York Times in 1981 that he did not believe in any color curse. The curse talk grew later, after big losses in blue, but the policy came first.
The tradition has a side effect that opponents have used since the 1970s, according to SI: since Dallas wears white at home, the way to put the Cowboys in their navy jersey is to wear white yourself when they visit. That is exactly what happens on all three of Dallas's navy dates in 2026. More on that below.
2. Miami Dolphins: 6 White Home Games
Miami is the other team that treats white as its real home color. Two white home games are already in the books, against Kansas City in Week 3 and an all-white look against Cincinnati in Week 5. Two more are announced: Detroit in Week 9, and the white throwback against the Bears on December 13, which is why Chicago wears navy that day. The other two, New England in Week 8 and the Jets in Week 12, are our projection. Miami announced themes for those dates, not jerseys, so treat them as likely, not locked. The Dolphins go to color for the last two home games: aqua against the Chargers and the Dark Water Rivalries set against Buffalo.

Why do the Dolphins wear white at home? We could not find a formal explanation from the team, but the reason most often given is the South Florida heat. A white jersey reflects sun, a dark one soaks it up, and the home team gets to decide which side suffers. SI's All Dolphins beat writer Alain Poupart put it plainly in August when a reader asked about the team's jersey choices: the heat "likely will convince Miami to be in white jerseys again." Notice that Miami's color games are bunched in December and January, when the heat lets up.
3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: 5 White Home Games
Nobody has worn white at home more often so far this season than Tampa Bay. The Buccaneers wore white in each of their first four home games, against Cleveland, Minnesota, Green Bay and Pittsburgh, and the Steelers game on October 18 was white over white pants. Tampa Bay has not published a full uniform schedule, so the rest is our projection: white once more against Atlanta on November 1, then red the rest of the way, with the Creamsicle throwback against the Chargers and the all-pewter set against the Saints mixed in.

The Bucs have not said why, but the timing tells the story: white from September into early November, the hottest stretch of the year in Tampa, then the red jersey once it cools off. It is the same logic as Miami with a shorter white season.
The Teams With Two
- Houston Texans: both already worn. The Liberty White against Buffalo in Week 1, then white with navy pants and red socks against Dallas in Week 4, the colors of the franchise's first game in 2002, for the Texans' 25th season. Wearing white that day also put the Cowboys in navy.
- New Orleans Saints: the Saints published a full plan built on black at home. White against Atlanta on Monday night in Week 4 is done, and the white alternate with the white helmet, which the Saints wore on the road at the Giants in Week 6, comes home against Arizona in Week 16.
- New York Jets: the all-white White Out against Green Bay in Week 2, and the all-white Classic against Miami this Sunday, October 25. That second one means the Dolphins, a white-at-home team, are expected in aqua on the road.
- Los Angeles Rams: the Fearsome White against Green Bay in Week 12, and the standard white jersey against Dallas in Week 15, from the schedule the Rams published on September 1, which puts the Cowboys in navy.
- Cincinnati Bengals: the White Bengal alternate against Pittsburgh in Week 10 is announced. White against Baltimore in Week 17 is our projection.
The One-Timers
Most of the teams with a single white home game are wearing a special white uniform, not their standard road jersey at home:
- Baltimore Ravens: the all-white White Noise against New Orleans in Week 2, already worn.
- Washington Commanders: the standard white with burgundy pants against the Giants in Week 5, already worn.
- Buffalo Bills: the all-white Cold Front Rivalries uniform against Miami in Week 11.
- Indianapolis Colts: the White Out against Dallas in Week 9, which puts the Cowboys in navy again.
- New York Giants: the Vintage White against Washington on Thursday night in Week 10.
- Minnesota Vikings: the Winter Warrior against Washington in Week 16.
- Arizona Cardinals: the standard white against the Jets in Week 15, from the schedule the Cardinals published on September 1.
The 16 Teams With No White Home Game in 2026
The 49ers, Broncos, Browns, Chiefs, Chargers, Eagles, Falcons, Jaguars, Lions, Packers, Patriots, Panthers, Raiders, Seahawks, Steelers and Titans have no white jersey on any home date in 2026. That includes Atlanta, a warm-weather team that is in red at home all season apart from two 1966 throwback games, and Jacksonville, which wears teal or black at home, including teal for both London games.
The Chicago Bears are the one open question. Our Bears schedule lists the classic throwback in white at home against Jacksonville on December 6, but the Bears themselves have only confirmed their Christmas Day Rivalries game, so we have that date as TBA and do not count it.
Why Most NFL Teams Wear Color at Home
In the NFL, the home team picks its jersey and the visitor wears the opposite, white against color. (We explain the whole process in who decides which uniforms teams wear each game.) Most teams choose color, because it is the jersey fans identify with and the one that sells. For 16 teams, white is strictly the road jersey.
The interesting part is what happens when a team chooses white on purpose:
- The heat. Dallas, Miami and Tampa Bay, three of the warmest early-season markets in the league, account for 19 of the 36 white home games. White puts the visitors in the dark jersey on the hot afternoons.
- Tradition. Dallas has done it for so long that white is simply the Cowboys' home look.
- Forcing the visitor into color. Three of this season's white home games come against Dallas. The Texans, Colts and Rams all wear white when the Cowboys visit, and those are the only three games all season where Dallas wears its navy primary jersey.
- Alternates. White Out, White Noise, Cold Front, Winter Warrior, Vintage White, Fearsome White. A lot of the league's white home games in 2026 are special uniforms, not the regular road jersey.
The Bottom Line
Only the Cowboys still wear white at home as a rule. Dallas has eight white home games in 2026, Miami has six and Tampa Bay five, and those three teams account for more than half of the league's 36 white home games. Sixteen teams have no white home game at all in 2026. When anyone else does it, it is usually an all-white alternate, or a deliberate move to put the Cowboys in navy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which NFL teams wear white at home? In 2026, 15 teams wear a white jersey for at least one home game. The Cowboys lead with eight, then the Dolphins with six and the Buccaneers with five. The Texans, Saints, Jets, Rams and Bengals have two each, and the Ravens, Commanders, Cardinals, Bills, Colts, Vikings and Giants have one each.
Which NFL team wears white at home the most? The Dallas Cowboys, with eight of their nine home games in white in 2026, including two in the all-white Arctic White Color Rush. The only home game in color is the navy Thanksgiving Classic against Philadelphia on November 26.
Why do the Cowboys wear white at home? The policy dates to Tex Schramm, the team's original president and general manager, who wanted Dallas fans to see visiting teams in their own colors. The Texas heat was part of it too: the team's longtime equipment director has said white at home started with the heat. It was not caused by the "blue jersey curse," which came later.
Do the Cowboys ever wear blue at home? Rarely. In 2026, the only home game in a dark jersey is the Thanksgiving Classic, a navy 1960s throwback, against the Eagles on November 26. Dallas wears its regular navy jersey three times, all on the road, at Houston, Indianapolis and the Rams.
Why do the Cowboys wear navy on the road sometimes? Because the home team picks first. When a host wears white, the visitor has to wear color. In 2026 the Texans, Colts and Rams all chose white against Dallas, so those are the Cowboys' three navy games.
Why do the Dolphins wear white at home? The team has not given an official reason, but the South Florida heat is the explanation most often given: white reflects sun and puts the visitors in the hotter dark jersey. Miami wears white for six of its eight home games in 2026 and switches to aqua and its Dark Water Rivalries set in December and January.
Do the Buccaneers wear white at home? Yes, early in the season. Tampa Bay wore white for each of its first four home games in 2026, more than any team so far, and we project one more white game against Atlanta on November 1 before the Bucs switch to red.
How many NFL teams don't wear white at home in 2026? Sixteen in 2026: the 49ers, Broncos, Browns, Chiefs, Chargers, Eagles, Falcons, Jaguars, Lions, Packers, Patriots, Panthers, Raiders, Seahawks, Steelers and Titans. The Bears have one possible white home game, the classic throwback against Jacksonville in Week 13, that is not yet confirmed.
Do the Falcons wear white at home? No. Atlanta wears red at home in 2026, with the black 1966 throwback in Weeks 7 and 13. White is the Falcons' road jersey.
Do the Eagles wear white at home? Not in 2026. Philadelphia wears midnight green at home, with Kelly Green and the black alternate on special dates.
Who decides whether the home team wears white in the NFL? The home team. It picks white or color, and the visiting team wears the opposite. That is why a team like Dallas, which wears white at home, can wear color only when a host chooses white.
Is it bad luck for the Cowboys to wear blue? That is a fan superstition, not a team policy. The white-at-home tradition started before the curse talk, and Tex Schramm said in 1981 that he did not believe in any color curse.
Do NFL teams wear white at home more than NBA teams? Far less. Only about 13 percent of NFL home games in 2026 are in white. In the NBA, the home team used to wear white by rule, and our playoff tracking found it now wears white only about a third of the time, for reasons we explain in why NBA teams don't wear white at home.
What does "designated home team" mean for international games? Games in London, Paris, Madrid, Munich, Mexico City, Melbourne and Rio de Janeiro still have a home team, and that team picks its jersey. Dallas was the home team in Rio and wore white. Jacksonville was the home team for both London games and wore teal.
