Every 2026 NFL Historic Sideline Hat, Ranked: The Throwbacks Are Better Than the Real Ones

The best hats New Era made this year are not the ones the whole league is wearing. They are the throwbacks.

Alongside the standard 2026 Sideline caps, 26 teams got a Historic version: same 9SEVENTY Stretch-Snap silhouette with the notched brim, same raised rubber logo, same sliver of color under the brim edge, but with an old logo on the front and, in several cases, an old color underneath it. As a group they grade a full half-letter higher than the primaries, a B+ against a B-, and the reason is simple. Old logos were drawn to be seen from a distance, and this treatment rewards exactly that.

Six teams do not get one at all: the Ravens, Panthers, Texans, Chiefs, Titans, and Commanders. Five of the six are either expansion-era franchises or teams that have rebranded away from what came before, which tells you something about who actually has a vault worth opening.

26. Jacksonville Jaguars

Black crown with the teal jaguar head, which is a problem of history rather than design. The Jaguars entered the league in 1995 and their throwback is a logo plenty of people still think of as current. The execution is fine and the teal is sharp against the black. There is just nothing here that feels like it was pulled out of a vault.

25. Chicago Bears

Navy crown with the orange bear head. Chicago has one of the deepest visual histories in football and this reaches for a secondary mark that is neither the wishbone C nor genuinely old. The orange reads well enough, but the bear head is a fussy illustration full of small strokes that turn muddy in raised rubber. For this franchise, a real missed opportunity.

24. San Francisco 49ers

Red crown with the SF oval rendered in tonal red and black. San Francisco's oval barely changed across the eras, so the historic cap ends up looking almost identical to the primary, and it inherits the same flaw: without the white fill, the oval is a dark shape rather than a logo. Two hats, one problem, no throwback payoff.

23. Los Angeles Chargers

Powder blue crown with the old LA shield, the one with the bolt and the ram-horn arch. Genuinely lovely source material, and powder blue is the right base. It lands here because the shield is small and detailed, packing a lot of gold linework into a badge that the rubber treatment cannot quite resolve. Beautiful logo, slightly oversmoothed.

22. Arizona Cardinals

Black crown with the 1960s cardinal perched on a football. The mark itself is a delight, a proper old-fashioned illustrated bird with real charm to it, and putting it on black is a smart call. What holds it back is that the cardinal is rendered in a soft red that sits too close to the black around it, so a lot of that charm gets swallowed.

21. Atlanta Falcons

Red crown with the angular black falcon that reads as an F. This is a strong logo and the red base is the right nod to Atlanta's older sets, but black on red is a low-contrast pairing and the falcon's sharp geometry needs light to work. Better than the Falcons' primary, which is saying something, and still not what this mark deserves.

20. Los Angeles Rams

Royal crown with LOS ANGELES RAMS stacked in gold block lettering. Clean, confident, and a nice change of pace in a collection full of mascots and crests. It sits mid-table because a wordmark is inherently less interesting than a throwback illustration, and because the Rams' own primary cap does the blue-and-gold thing better with the horn.

19. Las Vegas Raiders

Black crown with the silver shield. Sound familiar? The Raiders have run essentially the same logo since 1963, so their throwback is the same pirate in the same shield, executed the same way as the primary. It is a good hat both times. It just cannot be a throwback when nothing was ever thrown back.

18. Cleveland Browns

Brown crown with Brownie the Elf in orange. One of the strangest and most beloved logos in football, a little pointy-eared elf in mid-stride, and Cleveland is exactly the kind of franchise that should be leaning on it. The orange fill loses some of the elf's facial detail, but the shape is so odd and so specific that it survives. Real personality.

17. New England Patriots

Royal crown with Pat Patriot, the crouching minuteman snapping a football. The royal blue is the correct throwback base and it instantly separates this from the navy modern set. The knock is the same as everywhere else in this collection: Pat Patriot is a detailed illustration, and rendering him in two flat tones costs him his face.

16. Miami Dolphins

Teal crown with the original sunburst dolphin, the one wearing the little helmet with the M on it, in orange. This is a significant upgrade on Miami's primary cap for one simple reason: the old logo has a heavy circular sunburst around it, which gives the orange something solid to fill. The Dolphins should consider just going back to this full time.

15. Buffalo Bills

Royal crown with the red standing buffalo from the 1962 set. The standing buffalo is a fuller, chunkier shape than the modern charging version, so it takes the flat red fill much better. Buffalo's throwback identity is one of the strongest in the league and this is a faithful, unfussy version of it. Nothing clever, nothing wrong.

14. Seattle Seahawks

Royal blue crown with the 1976 osprey in green. The original Seahawks logo is a stylized, almost totemic bird that is far more graphic than the modern one, and it takes this treatment beautifully. Marks are lost for the green sitting a touch dark against the royal, which mutes what should be a striking pairing, but this is a proper throwback done properly.

Kelly green crown with the white JETS oval, the football-and-wordmark badge from the Namath era. Crisp, high contrast, and instantly dated in the best way. It ranks just outside the top ten because the Jets' modern primary cap is so good that this one has to fight its own teammate, and the oval is a slightly stiffer shape than the flying NY.

12. Green Bay Packers

Navy crown with the gold GB in block letters. The navy is the surprise and the reason this works, because Green Bay wore blue and gold before the green arrived and almost nobody remembers it. Pulling a color out of the archive rather than just an old logo is the smartest thing any team did in this collection. Gold on navy is gorgeous.

11. Dallas Cowboys

Navy crown with the cowboy on horseback in white and navy. This is the mark Dallas used before the star took over, a little lariat-swinging rider, and it is full of character that the modern identity deliberately sanded off. Rendering it in white keeps it legible, and the whole thing feels like a franchise remembering it used to be fun.

10. Detroit Lions

Powder blue crown with the leaping lion set over two vertical bars in white. The bars are what make this, giving the mark a structure and a frame that almost nothing else in the collection has. It reads as a designed badge rather than a logo dropped onto fabric, and the powder blue is warmer and softer than Detroit's modern Honolulu blue.

9. Pittsburgh Steelers

Black crown with the gold steelworker, the 1960s mascot hauling a beam with a football tucked under his arm. It is a gloriously literal piece of mid-century sports art and it is exactly right for this city. Gold on black gives it all the contrast it needs. The only thing keeping it from the top five is how much fine detail gets flattened.

Black crown with the orange leaping tiger from the 1968 set. A genuinely great logo, all motion and stripes, and it is a reminder that the Bengals had a real identity before the block B. The orange on black is bright and confident, and the tiger's stripes give the raised rubber something to actually do. A big upgrade on their primary.

7. Indianapolis Colts

Royal crown with the old colt mascot, a cartoon horse in a helmet kicking a football. Indianapolis runs the plainest logo in the NFL, so seeing this much personality from the same franchise is a genuine surprise. The white and gray rendering keeps it clean, and the whole hat feels like a small act of rebellion against the horseshoe.

Navy crown with GIANTS in red block letters with a drop shadow. This is the best wordmark in the collection by a wide margin. The letterforms are heavy and slightly condensed, the drop shadow gives it depth the flat marks around it lack, and red on navy is a pairing the Giants should use far more than they do. Enormously better than their lowercase ny primary.

5. Denver Broncos

Royal blue crown with the orange D and the bucking horse inside it, the 1968 to 1996 mark. This logo is the reason a generation of people love the Broncos, and it has lost none of its punch. The orange fill is bright, the horse reads perfectly inside the letter, and royal blue is a far better base for Denver than navy ever was.

Black crown with Sir Saint, the swaggering little knight with the fleur-de-lis shield. This is the kind of logo the modern league would never approve and that is exactly why it is wonderful. Gold on black gives it real presence, and next to the Saints' plain fleur-de-lis primary it shows how much charm the franchise left on the table.

3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Creamsicle orange crown with Bucco Bruce, the winking pirate on his flag, in red. The single biggest jump between a team's primary and historic cap in the entire collection, going from our worst-graded primary to a top-three throwback. Creamsicle is one of the great colors in football history, Bucco Bruce is one of its great logos, and putting them together on a clean modern silhouette is close to perfect.

2. Minnesota Vikings

Purple crown with the white throwback helmet mark, the horned Norseman helmet with the facemask, and a gold sliver under the brim. This is the most complete hat in either collection. The helmet is a bold, simple, unmistakable shape, white gives it maximum contrast against the purple, and the gold edge ties it off. Minnesota's primary cap graded a B-. This is what the same team looks like when the logo actually fits the treatment.

1. Philadelphia Eagles

Kelly green crown with the flying eagle carrying a football in its talons, in white with black detailing, over a black brim sliver. The best hat New Era made this year, full stop. Kelly green is a color Philadelphia should never have abandoned, the 1970s eagle is a piece of genuine illustration with wings spread across the whole front panel, and the white keeps every bit of it legible. It is nostalgic without being fussy, loud without being busy, and it makes the case for the entire historic program on its own.

The Bottom Line

Put the two collections side by side and the gap is not subtle. The primary caps average a B-, the historics average a B+, and the top of this list is stronger than anything in the standard set. The Eagles and Vikings both earned A+ grades here. Not one primary cap did.

The reason is the same thing that sank half the primary ranking. New Era's 2026 template renders a logo as a flat raised shape, and old logos were built for exactly that world, drawn with heavy outlines and solid shapes because they had to read on a helmet from the upper deck of a stadium in 1968. Modern marks are full of gradients, thin strokes, and internal detail that a rubber patch simply cannot hold.

The teams that jumped furthest prove it. Tampa Bay went from our worst-graded primary to a top-three throwback by swapping a red-on-red flag for Bucco Bruce on creamsicle. New Orleans, Cincinnati, and the Giants all made similar leaps. Meanwhile the four teams whose historic cap graded lower than their primary, the Rams, Jets, Bears, and Jaguars, are all teams whose modern logo is already excellent or whose history is too short to raid.
