Why Do the Dolphins Wear White at Home? The Miami Heat Explained (and How Rarely They Wear Aqua)

By ColorWay Sports Staff·

The Miami Dolphins will be in white from helmet to pants against the New England Patriots on Sunday, and that is not a special occasion. It's how Miami dresses at home. The team's "Week 8's wardrobe" post on October 29 puts the Dolphins in White on White (white helmet, white jersey, white pants) for the 4:25 p.m. ET game at Hard Rock Stadium, with the Patriots in navy over silver pants.

Most NFL teams wear their color at home. Miami's color is aqua, one of the best in sports, and in 2026 the Dolphins plan to wear it at home once. So why do the Dolphins wear white at home? Here's what the record actually supports, which other teams do it, how often Miami goes aqua, and our take.

Quick Answers

  • Why do the Dolphins wear white at home? The South Florida heat. A white jersey reflects sun, a dark one absorbs it, and in the NFL the home team picks its jersey, so wearing white puts the visitor in the hot dark one. We couldn't find a formal team explanation, but that's the reason given by beat writers and weather coverage.
  • Is there more to it than the jersey? Yes. Since Hard Rock Stadium's 2016 renovation, the canopy shades Miami's sideline while the visitors' sideline sits in direct sun.
  • How often do the Dolphins wear white at home in 2026? Six of eight home games, counting the white throwback against the Bears on December 13.
  • Do the Dolphins ever wear aqua at home? Once in 2026: the Chargers in Week 16 (our projection, not a team announcement). The other non-white home game is the near-black Dark Water Rivalries set against Buffalo on January 3.
  • Who else does it? The Dallas Cowboys, more than anyone: eight of nine home games in white in 2026. Tampa Bay wears white early in the season too.
  • Our take (opinion): white in September and October makes sense. One aqua home game all year is too few.

What the Dolphins Are Wearing Against the Patriots

Week 8, Sunday, November 1, 4:25 p.m. ET on CBS. Miami is in the white jersey with aqua numbers outlined in orange, plus the white helmet and white pants. New England announced navy over silver pants, its only road game in navy this season. It's the same all-white look Miami wore against Cincinnati in Week 5. Every matchup is in our NFL Week 8 uniform guide.

Why the Dolphins Wear White at Home: The Heat

Start with the rule. In the NFL, the home team chooses white or its color, and the visitor wears the opposite. We explain the whole process in who decides which uniforms teams wear each game. Most teams choose color. Miami usually chooses white.

The reason is the sun. A white jersey reflects it and a dark one soaks it up, so when the Dolphins wear white, the visitors spend a hot afternoon in their darkest jersey. The Weather Channel's Mark Smith put it plainly in September: Miami "chooses to wear their white jerseys at home if it's hot and in the afternoon," which he noted is most of their games, most of the season. SI's All Dolphins beat writer Alain Poupart, answering a reader in an August 17 mailbag, said "the heat likely will convince Miami to be in white jerseys again."

You can see it in the 2026 calendar. Miami's white home games run from September through mid-December. The aqua game and the Dark Water game are the last two home dates, Week 16 and January 3, when South Florida finally cools off.

What we couldn't find is an official team policy or a published team explanation. Fans often trace the habit to the Don Shula years. The white set from the early Shula era is the one Miami brings back as its throwback, and it's the jersey of the 1972 perfect season. But we found no Shula quote or team statement that made white at home a rule, so we're not going to tell you exactly when it started.

It's Not Just the Jersey: The Shaded Sideline

The jersey is the half everyone can see. The other half is where each team stands.

When Hard Rock Stadium was renovated in 2016, it got a canopy over the seats. According to The Weather Channel, the canopy shades the Dolphins' sideline while the visitors' sideline gets direct sun. That's how the most famous heat game in recent Dolphins history happened, against Minnesota on October 16, 2022. FOX's Kenny Albert told viewers there was "a 30-degree difference" between the two sidelines, and FOX Weather reported the Vikings' sideline at about 122 degrees against 90 on Miami's side.

A Famous Example: Bills at Dolphins, 2022

Three weeks earlier, on September 25, 2022, Buffalo came to Miami for a 1 p.m. kickoff. The Dolphins chose white, which put the Bills in their blue jerseys. Chris Owen of The New 96.1 wrote before the game that "the reason the Dolphins always do this to the Bills is because of the heat in South Florida." Pro Football Talk put the temperature at 89 degrees, and the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle's Sal Maiorana reported that Bills receiver Isaiah McKenzie played through "heat issues and cramping," taking IVs at halftime.

We can't tell you how much the jersey color mattered that day against the shade, the humidity and everything else. But it's the game people bring up when they ask why the Dolphins wear white at home.

How Often the Dolphins Wear White at Home in 2026

Miami plays eight home games at Hard Rock Stadium this season. Six are in white:

  • Week 3 vs. Chiefs: white. Worn.
  • Week 5 vs. Bengals: all white. Worn.
  • Week 8 vs. Patriots: White on White. Announced by the team on October 29.
  • Week 9 vs. Lions: white. Scheduled.
  • Week 12 vs. Jets: white. Our projection; the team hasn't named a jersey yet.
  • Week 14 vs. Bears, December 13: the white throwback. Announced.

The other two:

  • Week 16 vs. Chargers: aqua. Our projection.
  • Week 17 vs. Bills, January 3: Dark Water, the near-black AFC East Rivalries uniform. Announced.

The three home looks that aren't the standard white. The throwback is shown as the Mitchell & Ness version of the same design, via the Dolphins team store.

Aqua still gets out of the closet on the road. Miami wore it at the Jets in Week 7, when New York was in its all-white Classic set, and it's expected at Buffalo in Week 11, when the Bills wear their all-white Cold Front set. Every date is in the Dolphins 2026 uniform schedule.

Which Other NFL Teams Wear White at Home?

Miami isn't alone, but the list is short. We counted every home game on the 2026 schedule in which NFL teams wear white at home:

  • Dallas Cowboys: 8 of 9 home games. The famous one. The tradition goes back to Tex Schramm, the team's first president and general manager, who wanted Dallas fans to see visiting teams in their own colors, Sports Illustrated reported. Heat was part of it in Dallas too: equipment director Mike McCord told Fox Sports in 2017 that it "started with the heat, especially at Texas Stadium." The only Dallas home game in color this year is the navy Thanksgiving Classic on November 26. (The Cowboys' home pants are their own mystery, explained in what color are the Cowboys' pants.)
  • Miami Dolphins: 6 of 8.
  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers: 5 of 9. White in each of their first four home games, then red once the weather turns. Same logic as Miami, shorter season of it. See the Buccaneers 2026 uniform schedule.

Those three warm-weather teams account for 19 of the league's 36 white home games in 2026. Sixteen teams don't wear white at home at all this season. Most of the other white home games are one-off alternates like the Ravens' White Noise or the Bills' Cold Front, not a team choosing white every week.

Our Take

This is opinion. The heat argument is real, and in September and October we'd do the same thing. If the rules let you put the other team in a dark jersey on a 90-degree afternoon while your sideline sits in the shade, you take it.

But Miami takes it too far. Aqua is a color no other NFL team uses as its main color, and we rank it second of Miami's four jerseys, behind only the throwback, in every Dolphins jersey, ranked. Home fans see it once in 2026, in Week 16. Meanwhile the team found a home date for a near-black Rivalries uniform with no black anywhere in the Dolphins' palette.

Keep white for the hot early-season afternoons. Once November hits, wear aqua at home. Hard Rock Stadium should look like the Dolphins more than once a year.

The Bottom Line

The Dolphins wear white at home because of the South Florida heat: white reflects the sun, and the home team's choice forces the visitor into a dark jersey. Hard Rock Stadium's shaded home sideline adds to it. We found no formal team policy, and the exact start date isn't on the record. In 2026 Miami wears white for six of its eight home games, including White on White against the Patriots on November 1, and aqua once.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do the Dolphins wear white at home?

Because of the South Florida heat. White reflects sunlight and dark colors absorb it, and since the home team picks its jersey, wearing white forces the visitors into their darker, hotter one. We couldn't find an official team explanation, but beat writers and weather coverage point to the heat, and Miami's color games come late in the season when it cools down.

Do the Dolphins ever wear aqua at home?

Yes, but rarely. In 2026 the aqua jersey is projected for one home game, the Chargers in Week 16. Miami also wore aqua on the road at the Jets in Week 7 and is expected in aqua at Buffalo in Week 11, both games where the host wore white.

What are the Dolphins wearing against the Patriots?

White on White: white helmet, white jersey and white pants, announced by the team on October 29 for Sunday, November 1 at 4:25 p.m. ET on CBS. The Patriots wear navy over silver pants.

How many home games do the Dolphins wear white in 2026?

Six of eight: the Chiefs, Bengals, Patriots, Lions and Jets in the standard white jersey, plus the white throwback against the Bears on December 13. The Jets game is our projection. The other two home games are aqua against the Chargers and the Dark Water Rivalries set against the Bills.

What teams wear white at home in the NFL?

Fifteen teams wear white for at least one home game in 2026. The Cowboys lead with eight, then the Dolphins with six and the Buccaneers with five. The Texans, Saints, Jets, Rams and Bengals have two each, and seven more teams have one, mostly special alternates. Sixteen teams never wear white at home this season.

Why do the Cowboys wear white at home?

Tex Schramm, the Cowboys' first president and general manager, adopted white at home so Dallas fans could see visiting teams in their own colors. The team's longtime equipment director has also said it started with the heat at Texas Stadium. The Cowboys wear white for eight of nine home games in 2026.

Who decides which team wears white in the NFL?

The home team. It chooses white or its team color, and the visiting team wears the opposite. That's why Miami's choice of white forces the visitor into color.

Why is the Dolphins' sideline in the shade?

Hard Rock Stadium's 2016 renovation added a canopy that shades the Dolphins' sideline while the visitors' sideline stays in direct sun. In an October 2022 game against Minnesota, FOX reported about a 30-degree difference between the two benches, about 122 degrees on the Vikings' side and 90 on Miami's.

Did the Dolphins wear white in the 1972 perfect season?

The white uniform from that era is the one Miami brings back as its throwback, and it's the set associated with the perfect season. We couldn't find a reliable game-by-game record of which jersey Miami wore at each 1972 home game, so we're not counting them here.

Is the Dolphins' primary jersey aqua or white?

Aqua is the primary home jersey, but white does most of the work. In 2026 the white jersey projects to 12 of 17 games, home and road, and aqua to three.

When do the Dolphins wear their throwback in 2026?

Once, at home against the Chicago Bears on Sunday, December 13. It's a white jersey, so it counts as a white home game and puts the Bears in color.

Why are the Dolphins wearing black?

That's Dark Water, Miami's Nike Rivalries uniform from the 2025 AFC East wave. It's near-black, and Miami wears it once in 2026, at home against Buffalo on January 3. We gave it a C+ in our Dark Water grade.
