The Home Shirt: B

A sky-blue gradient fading from darker shoulders down to white at the hem, with a metallic silver crest. PUMA's stated idea is that it holds every shade of blue in City's history in one shirt.

The concept is genuinely interesting. The execution is where it falls apart. ESPN ranked it 30th of every Premier League shirt and said the colours look like they have run in the wash, and that is difficult to unsee once someone puts it in your head. A gradient asks you to accept that the shirt has no single colour, which is a strange thing to ask of a club whose entire identity is one very specific blue.

There is a decent version of this idea. It would involve the gradient being much subtler, or confined to one panel. As shipped, the bottom third of the shirt is essentially white.

The Away Shirt: C+

Black with yellow-gold accents and an all-over worker-bee pattern, with all logos rendered monochrome. The bee is a Manchester symbol and an industrial-heritage nod.

This is the lowest grade in our entire European ranking. The reference is good and the bee print is well drawn, but nothing about the finished shirt says Manchester City. There is no blue anywhere. Once the print is carrying the shirt and the logos have gone monochrome, you are left with a black shirt with a pattern on it that could belong to almost any club in Europe.

Heritage references work when they sit on top of an identity. This one replaced it.

The Third Shirt: B

White, split down the middle by a stripe that shades from navy on one side to sky blue on the other, with a deep V-collar, a narrow navy and sky panel down each flank, embossed CITY lettering on the cuffs and A.I. CREATOR printed on the neck tape. Navy shorts and white socks. Released August 27.

The story is the process. A supporter named Elliott built the design with PUMA's AI Creator tool, City say around 180,000 shirts were submitted from over 200 countries, and 1.7 million votes picked this one from a shortlist of ten. PUMA added the gradient blur under the sponsor, and that soft patch in the middle of the chest is the one thing on the shirt we would change.

Set the process aside, because a shirt has to work on its own, and this one does. It is a clean white kit with one clear idea in the centre of it, and that is more than either of City's other two managed this year. The gradient home tried to hold every shade of blue at once and the away forgot to be blue at all. A fan and a prompt produced the most City-looking shirt in the wardrobe.
