Chelsea's 2026/27 Kits: Why The Home Shirt Looks Empty

ColorWay Sports·

Chelsea's 2026/27 home shirt has an unusual problem: a large empty space across the chest, because the club are going into the season without a front-of-shirt sponsor. It is the first thing you notice and it is not really a design fault. The away shirt has a different problem, and that one is a design fault.

What Does Chelsea's 2026/27 Home Kit Look Like?

Solid blue with gold piping on the shoulder seams and side panels, and a gold laurel-wreath graphic around the collar and cuffs.

The gold works. This is the counter-example to Juventus putting gold on white: on solid Chelsea blue, gold has all the contrast it needs, and the laurel wreath around the collar is the best-executed trim detail of any Premier League shirt this season.

ESPN ranked it 35th of every Premier League kit and called it both minimalist and clunky, which we think is harsh on the gold work but fair on the overall proportions. The blank chest is doing the club no favours visually.

It will look considerably better once something fills that space, which is a strange thing to say about a shirt and the honest truth here.

Grade: B+

What Does Chelsea's 2026/27 Away Kit Look Like?

Solid black with Midwest Gold trim and a standalone gold lion crest, Chelsea's first mostly black away in years. Released July 21.

Taken entirely on its own this is a nice shirt. The standalone gold lion is a strong mark and the black-and-gold pairing is clean.

The trouble is it has nothing to do with Chelsea. Strip the crest off and you could sell this to half the clubs in Europe. Chelsea's identity is blue, comprehensively and without much ambiguity, and a change kit that abandons it entirely is a missed opportunity rather than a bold one.

We said the same about Manchester City's worker-bee away, which took the lowest grade in our whole ranking for the same reason.

The Third Shirt: Not Yet Released

Chelsea's third kit has not launched. It is expected to be predominantly white with Rush Blue and Global Red accents, and reporting suggests it will carry a retro crest based on the 1990s and early 2000s badge, which would make it the most interesting of the three. We grade it when Chelsea release it.

Chelsea Have No Shirt Sponsor

This is the context that explains the home shirt. Chelsea are entering 2026/27 without a front-of-shirt sponsor, so the largest area of the kit is simply empty blue.

For a designer that is a nightmare, because shirt layouts are composed around the sponsor block. Remove it and the crest, the maker's mark and the trim all end up floating with nothing to balance against. None of that is Nike's fault, and it is the single biggest reason this shirt reads as unresolved.

Who Makes Chelsea's Kits?

Nike, who have supplied Chelsea since 2017.

The Bottom Line

Chelsea's 2026/27 home shirt is a B+, with the best gold trim work in the Premier League let down by a blank chest where a sponsor should be. The black away with the standalone gold lion is a B-, a nice shirt that could belong to any club. The retro-crest third is still to come. Wardrobe grade: B.
