The 2026 NBA Round 1 closeout weekend put NBC and ABC head to head on three different Game 7s, and NBC won the production battle by a clean margin. NBC drew Celtics-Sixers at TD Garden on Saturday night and Cavaliers-Raptors at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse on Sunday afternoon. ABC drew Magic-Pistons at Little Caesars Arena on Sunday afternoon. All three series ended 4-3. NBC's broadcasts looked sharper from the open to the buzzer with cleaner graphics, more cinematic camera work, and a peacock-era studio package that has shown up better than ABC's NBA presentation through the entire 2026 postseason. ABC's Magic-Pistons Game 7 looked like a regular-season game.
This is the read on the broadcast difference, what NBC did better across the two Game 7s it carried, and where ABC's coverage of the Magic-Pistons closeout fell short.
The 2026 NBA Round 1 Game 7 Broadcast Lineup
Three of eight first-round series went the distance to a Game 7 in the 2026 NBA Playoffs, and the broadcast windows split between NBC's new NBA package and ABC's continuing Sunday playoff slate.
- Saturday night, NBC: Sixers at Celtics at TD Garden. Sixers won 4-3 to advance to Round 2.
- Sunday afternoon, ABC: Magic at Pistons at Little Caesars Arena. Pistons won 4-3 to advance.
- Sunday afternoon, NBC: Raptors at Cavaliers at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse. Cavaliers won 4-3 to advance.
NBC carried two of the three. ABC carried one. The split is partly a function of the new 2026 NBA broadcast deal that put more high-profile playoff windows on NBC and Peacock, and partly a function of the East-bracket Sunday afternoon stack falling to whichever network had the inventory at that time slot.
NBC's Celtics-Sixers Game 7 at TD Garden
The Celtics-Sixers Game 7 at TD Garden was the loudest broadcast of the weekend. NBC opened with a cinematic cold open running game-by-game B-roll from the previous six matchups in the series, ran a scored voiceover through the through-line, and gave the broadcast room to breathe through the pre-game introductions before tip. The TD Garden parquet floor, the home Association whites versus the Philadelphia Icon royal blue, and the playoff lights treatment all read clean on the NBC graphics package.
Boston ran the home Association whites for the deciding game and Philadelphia ran the Icon Edition royal blue, the textbook white-versus-color matchup that graded a perfect 10 in the 2026 NBA Round 1 jersey tracker. NBC's graphics package stayed out of the way of the basketball, the camera mix favored close cuts on key possessions, and the broadcast trusted the action to fill the frame. There is no heavy promo crawl through the action. There is no overloaded ribbon stack at the top of the screen.

The NBC scorebug sits low on the screen, runs slim, and lets the basketball action carry the frame. The score, the time, the period, and the team marks all read on a quick glance. It is the same scorebug that has graded out as one of the cleaner national broadcast looks of 2026, ranked in our NBA national broadcast scorebugs roundup and the NBC NBA scorebug breakdown. The broadcast cycles into the bumpers on a clean rhythm and lets the playoff stakes carry the air around the basketball.
NBC's Cavaliers-Raptors Game 7 at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse
The Cavaliers-Raptors Game 7 was NBC's Sunday afternoon broadcast and the network ran the exact same production playbook as the Saturday night Celtics-Sixers window. Same cinematic cold open with game-by-game B-roll under a scored voiceover. Same slim peacock-era scorebug low on the screen. Same camera mix favoring close cuts on key possessions. Same well-lit arena treatment. Same peacock branding across the studio bumpers. The two NBC Game 7 broadcasts were effectively interchangeable in production quality, which is the whole point: NBC has a real playoff event-show package and ran it twice in a row.
The Cavaliers wore the Statement Edition black at home for the deciding game, which graded out as a wrong-color call at 2 out of 10 in our Round 1 jersey tracker, and Toronto wore the Icon Edition red on the road. The broadcast sold the matchup hard despite the smaller national name recognition versus the Boston-Philadelphia headliner from the night before. The Cavaliers-Raptors window grades out the same as the Celtics-Sixers window because NBC's production was the same on both.
ABC's Magic-Pistons Game 7 at Little Caesars Arena

ABC's Magic-Pistons Game 7 was the third closeout window of the weekend and the broadcast looked a full tier behind NBC's two. The ESPN-family scorebug that ABC runs is a heavier, top-of-screen treatment that we have already graded as the lower-end scorebug of the 2026 national NBA broadcast cycle in our ESPN NBA scorebug review. The graphics ribbon eats more vertical real estate. The promo crawl runs through possessions. The pre-game package leaned more on talking-head desk segments and less on cinematic series recap.
The basketball read was clean enough. Detroit wore the Association whites at home for the seventh straight game in the series, the textbook white-versus-color matchup with Orlando finally pulling out the Icon Edition blue road jersey for the first time after six straight Statement black road wears in the prior six games. The uniforms graded out at a perfect 10 in our jersey tracker. But the broadcast around the basketball did not match what NBC put on the air for the other two Game 7s on the same weekend.
What NBC Did Better
The NBC broadcast advantage across the Celtics-Sixers and Cavaliers-Raptors windows came from four pieces.
The scorebug stays out of the way. NBC's scorebug runs lower on the frame, slimmer in vertical height, and uses cleaner type. The score, the time, the period, and the team marks all read on a quick glance. ABC's scorebug carries more visual weight at the top of the screen.
The cinematic open does the work. Both NBC Game 7s opened with a cold-open package running B-roll from the previous six games of the series, set to score and voiceover. ABC's Magic-Pistons open leaned on the desk and the talking heads, which works for a regular-season studio show but lands flatter on a Game 7.
The camera mix favors closer cuts on key possessions. NBC's broadcast cuts to tighter angles on the post-up, on the ball-handler in pick-and-roll, and on the rim during the catch in transition. ABC stays wider for longer stretches.
The branded peacock identity shows up. NBC has leaned hard into the peacock palette and the Peacock streaming bumpers across the 2026 playoffs. ABC's NBA broadcast looks more like a generic ESPN-family broadcast with the ABC bug in the corner. Branded production design is part of how a Game 7 feels like an event, and NBC delivered that piece harder than ABC did.

Was the Cavaliers-Raptors Game 7 on NBC or ESPN?
The Cavaliers-Raptors Game 7 at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse on Sunday was on NBC. NBC ran the same cinematic production package it used for the Celtics-Sixers Saturday window. The Cavaliers won 4-3 to advance to Round 2 in their wrong-color Statement Edition black home jersey.
Was the Magic-Pistons Game 7 on ABC or ESPN?

Why does NBC's NBA broadcast look better than ABC's in 2026?
NBC's 2026 NBA broadcast leans on a slimmer scorebug, cinematic cold-open packages, tighter camera cuts on key possessions, and a branded peacock production identity that fits the playoff stakes. ABC's broadcast uses the heavier ESPN-family scorebug, leans more on talking-head desk segments, and carries the same general look as ESPN's regular-season broadcasts. The difference is most visible on a Game 7, where NBC's event-show production sells the stakes harder.
Will NBC carry NBA Conference Finals games in 2026?
The 2026 NBA Conference Finals broadcast schedule splits between NBC and ABC under the new broadcast deal, with the NBA Finals carried by ABC. The exact game-by-game window assignments come out closer to the start of the Conference Finals.
TL;DR
NBC carried two of the three 2026 NBA Round 1 Game 7s and outclassed ABC's coverage of the third. NBC ran the same event-show production playbook on both Game 7s with cinematic cold opens, slim peacock-era scorebugs, tighter camera cuts on key possessions, and full peacock studio branding. ABC's Magic-Pistons broadcast looked like a regular-season ESPN game in a deciding-game window. NBC takes the closeout weekend at A on both broadcasts. ABC settles in at C+. The 2026 NBA broadcast deal that gave NBC more marquee playoff inventory is already paying off in production quality, and Conference Finals will be the next test.
