What If Every NFL Team Wore Its Throwback Full Time? 7 Teams That Would Get Better or Worse

By ColorWay Sports Staff·

Last Sunday the Falcons, Jets and Seahawks all wore throwbacks, and it was the best-looking NFL Sunday of the year. So here's the obvious question: why not every Sunday?

What if every NFL team threw out its current uniform and wore its throwback full time? Some teams would instantly look better. Some would lose the look they won championships in. We picked seven teams with real throwbacks in the closet right now and gave each one a verdict.

This is a hypothetical. No team has announced a full-time switch. It's our call, and you're going to disagree with at least one of these.

Quick Answers

  • Better full time: Seahawks (royal blue), Patriots (red Pat Patriot), Jaguars (teal Prowler), Falcons (1966 red helmet).
  • No real change: Vikings (Classic).
  • Worse full time: Buccaneers (creamsicle), Steelers (1933 gold).
  • Why are there so many throwbacks now? The NFL let teams use a second helmet shell again starting in 2022, which made real throwback helmets possible.
  • Hottest take on this list: the creamsicle should stay a once-a-year treat.

Why Throwbacks Took Over

From 2013 through 2021, NFL teams could use only one helmet shell all season. That killed most throwbacks: you can't do a real 1980s look with a 2020s helmet. The league dropped the one-shell rule for the 2022 season, the Boston Globe reported, and the floodgates opened. The Patriots and Falcons brought back their old helmets in 2022, the Seahawks, Vikings and Buccaneers followed in 2023, the Jaguars in 2024 and the Steelers' gold helmet in 2025.

The league still limits how many alternate and throwback games a team gets each season. Which is exactly why they feel special. Now imagine the limit was gone and the throwback was the uniform.

We ranked the throwbacks themselves in the best throwback uniforms in sports right now. This is a different question: not "is it good," but "is it better than what they wear now."

Seattle Seahawks: Royal Blue. Better.

Seattle Seahawks college navy home jersey

Now: navy

Throwback: royal

Seattle wore royal blue from its first season in 1976 through 2001, then switched to navy in 2002. The throwback came back in 2023 with royal jerseys and silver helmets, and it debuted in a 24-20 win over the Browns on October 29, 2023, NFL.com reported. Seattle wore it again on Sunday Night Football last weekend against the Chiefs, with silver pants.

Verdict: better. The navy era has the titles, and we know that's the counterargument. But the royal and silver look is brighter, cleaner and more unique. Navy is everywhere in the NFL. Royal blue with silver is Seattle's alone. Seahawks 2026 uniform schedule

New England Patriots: Red Pat Patriot. Better.

Now: navy

Throwback: red

The Patriots wore Pat Patriot, the hiking minuteman, on a white helmet from 1961 through 1992, the team's own history says. The red jerseys and white helmets came back as a throwback in 2022, and this year New England has worn them in Week 5 and has them again in Week 14.

Verdict: better. This is the one Patriots fans will fight us on, because all six Super Bowl titles came after the team switched to the "Flying Elvis" logo in 1993. We don't care. Red jersey, white helmet, Pat Patriot crouched on the side: it's one of the best uniforms the NFL has ever had. The navy set is fine. Fine isn't the standard. Patriots 2026 uniform schedule

Jacksonville Jaguars: Teal Prowler. Better.

Jacksonville Jaguars teal home jersey

Now: teal

Throwback: Prowler

The Prowler throwbacks recreate the Jaguars' original 1995 expansion uniform: a black helmet with the original jaguar-head logo, a teal jersey with white numbers trimmed in gold and black, and white pants. Jacksonville unveiled them for its 30th season in 2024, and they debuted against the Colts on October 6, 2024, Jacksonville Today reported.

Verdict: better, and it's not close. When the Prowlers came out, plenty of Jaguars fans asked the team to make them permanent. They were right. Teal is the Jaguars' whole identity, and the 1995 set wears it with more confidence than the current one. Jaguars 2026 uniform schedule

Atlanta Falcons: 1966 Throwback. Better.

1966 throwback: black, under a red helmet

The Falcons wore red helmets from 1966 until switching to black in 1990, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution notes. The 1966 throwback pairs that red helmet with a black jersey and white pants. Atlanta wore it last Sunday against the 49ers and won 29-20, and it's back in Week 13 against the Lions.

Verdict: better. Atlanta just redesigned its uniforms in April and made red the primary jersey again, which helps. But the red helmet is the piece the new set doesn't have, and it's the best helmet in the franchise's history. Red helmet, black jersey, every week. Falcons 2026 uniform schedule

Minnesota Vikings: Classic. No Real Change.

Minnesota Vikings purple home jersey

Now: purple

Throwback: Classic

The Vikings Classic, unveiled in July 2023, calls back to the Fran Tarkenton era of the 1960s and 1970s: a deeper purple, bigger numbers, retro sleeve stripes and an older version of the horn on a helmet with a gray facemask, CBS Sports reported. Minnesota scheduled it for its 2026 opener against Green Bay.

Verdict: push. It's a great uniform. So is the current one. Purple, gold and the horns are already in both, and a casual fan would need a minute to spot the difference. Switching full time changes the sleeve stripes and the facemask. That's a tweak, not an upgrade. Vikings 2026 uniform schedule

Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Creamsicle. Worse.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers red home jersey

Now: red and pewter

Tampa Bay Buccaneers orange creamsicle throwback jersey with white numbers outlined in red

Throwback: creamsicle

The Bucs wore orange and white with Bucco Bruce on the helmet from 1976 through 1996. They brought it back once a year from 2009 to 2012, then again in 2023, NFL.com reported. It's back on December 6 against the Chargers this season.

Verdict: worse. We love the creamsicle. Everyone loves the creamsicle. That's exactly why it should stay rare. Those uniforms lost their first 26 games, and the franchise won two Super Bowls after switching to red and pewter in 1997. Wear orange every week and it stops being an event and becomes a costume. Once a year, it's the best day on the Bucs' calendar. Leave it there. Buccaneers 2026 uniform schedule

Pittsburgh Steelers: 1933 Gold. Worse.

Pittsburgh Steelers black home jersey with gold numbers

Now: black

Pittsburgh Steelers gold 1933 throwback jersey with black stripes and white block numbers

Throwback: 1933

The 1933 throwback honors the franchise's first season, when the team was the Pittsburgh Pirates. It has black striping, oversized white block numbers, beige pants and a matte gold helmet, and it debuted on Sunday Night Football against the Packers on October 26, 2025, NFL.com reported. The team has confirmed it returns this season.

Verdict: worse. It's fun for a night. Full time, it's a bumblebee. The black jersey with gold numbers has barely changed in decades, and the black helmet with the logo on one side is the best helmet in football. We made that whole argument in what if the Steelers put their logo on both sides of the helmet. Trading that for the 1933 set would be the worst move on this list. Steelers 2026 uniform schedule

The Pattern

The throwbacks that win are the ones that replaced something with more color and more personality: royal over navy, red over navy, teal done right, a red helmet over a plain one. The throwbacks that lose are the ones that would replace a look that's already iconic. Pittsburgh's black and gold doesn't need saving. Tampa's creamsicle needs to stay a holiday.

That's our seven. Which team did we get wrong? Patriots fans, we're looking at you.
