Wumbo is back: Tulane brings back its oversized Angry Wave helmet for Halloween weekend

Tulane posted "WUMBO is BACK" on Wednesday with four photos of the helmet against a dark New Orleans skyline. It is a white helmet with an oversized green Angry Wave, the wave's eyes and curling crest spread across the whole shell, and a green facemask.

Wumbo is what Tulane and its fans call the big version of the Angry Wave logo. The program used #Wumbo when the helmet first came out in 2018, and it has come back a handful of times since, including in 2024. Tulane has not shown the jersey or pants yet.

The Green Wave play at Charlotte on Friday night, October 30, at 7 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2, the night before Halloween. Every other Halloween weekend look is in our college football Week 9 uniforms guide.

Wumbo is back, and it's a nice one for Halloween.

Oregon goes black helmet with white wings for Northwestern

Oregon posted its Game 8 combo on Wednesday night with the line "Bold by design." It is a matte black helmet with white wings and a black facemask, a black jersey with silver numbers outlined in green and diamond-plate texture across the shoulders, and white pants.

The white wings are the story. Oregon's helmets usually carry chrome, green or yellow wings, and a flat white wing on a black shell is about as stark as the Ducks get. The green only shows up in the outline around the numbers.

No. 20 Northwestern visits Autzen Stadium on Saturday, October 31, at 3:30 p.m. Eastern on Peacock. Oregon is 4-3 after losing 21-10 at Illinois. Every other Halloween weekend look is in our college football Week 9 uniforms guide.

It's a bit boring, but I like the helmet. I just wish there were green outlines around the feathers on the helmet.

Arkansas says no to Mizzou's color-on-color request for the Battle Line game

Missouri asked to wear its home jerseys at Arkansas on Saturday, and Arkansas said no. Mizzou head coach Eli Drinkwitz shared it this week, as Saturday Down South reported. The Tigers wanted a color-on-color game, with both teams in their home colors. Arkansas has not commented.

Under NCAA rules, the visiting team wears white unless the home team agrees to something else. So unless the Razorbacks change their minds, Missouri will be in white on Halloween night in Fayetteville, and Arkansas will be in a dark jersey for its Homecoming game. Arkansas fans have been calling for a blackout, but the school has not announced one, so cardinal is still the call until it does.

Kickoff is 7:45 p.m. ET on SEC Network, Saturday, October 31. Every Week 9 look is in our college football Week 9 uniforms guide, and both teams' full seasons are in the Missouri and Arkansas uniform schedules.

It would have been so cool to see color-on-color. I especially love it in football for special occasions, and a Halloween rivalry game is exactly that, so I don't agree with the decision.

The Falcons swap out a 1966 throwback profile picture after WWII comparisons

The Atlanta Falcons changed their X and Instagram profile pictures on Wednesday, October 21, to a retro graphic that nods to the 1966 expansion team: the original black falcon over vertical red, white and black stripes. The post was captioned "New PFP" with an eyes emoji.

The timing lines up with the uniforms. Atlanta wears its 1966 throwback, the red helmet, black jersey and white pants, on Sunday, October 25, against the 49ers at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. It is the first of two throwback dates this season. The second is Week 13 against the Lions on Sunday, December 6.

Replies quickly filled with users comparing the striped design and the black spread-wing falcon to World War II-era German military imagery, as NBC News reported. Most of the reaction came as jokes and memes. We did not find a statement from any advocacy group, and the NFL has not commented.

A team representative told NBC News the Falcons do not have a "new logo" and declined further comment. Within a day or two, the team quietly replaced the retro graphic with a red Falcons helmet, Yahoo Sports reported. As of Friday, the organization had not publicly addressed the reaction.

None of this changes Sunday. The throwback itself is not new. Atlanta brought back the red helmet with the black jersey in 2022, and kept it as the alternate when it released updated uniforms in April 2026, the set where red became the home jersey again. Because of that switch, the two throwback games are the only times all season the Falcons wear black.

On Saturday, October 24, the team confirmed the full look in a "Sunday attire" post: the throwback red helmet, throwback black jersey and throwback white pants. San Francisco is expected in its white road set. Every Week 7 look is in our NFL Week 7 uniforms guide, and every Falcons game is in the 2026 Falcons uniform schedule.

How it looked (updated Sunday, October 25): the throwback went on exactly as posted, red helmet, black jersey and white pants, and Atlanta beat San Francisco 29-20, with Michael Penix Jr. throwing a touchdown pass to Drake London.

The Rays' AL champions gear sticks with the standard TB look

The Rays clinched the pennant with a 7-3 win over the Guardians in Game 6 on Monday night, and the American League champions locker room gear is out: the Fanatics 2026 AL Champions locker room T-shirt in heather charcoal and the New Era 2026 American League Champions Locker Room 9SEVENTY adjustable hat in charcoal, the same template the Brewers got for winning the National League. It is essentially the same gear with a different logo, so it gets the same grades we gave Milwaukee's: a B for the shirt and a B+ for the hat.

Both use the Rays' standard TB logo and type, not the Devil Rays throwback look Tampa Bay wore in two of its three ALCS home games, Game 2 and the Game 6 clincher. The Rays are 2-0 in the throwback this postseason. Every jersey they have worn this October is in our World Series uniforms guide.

The Rays gear is fine. It's the same as the Brewers', but now it feels off to be using their standard TB logo and type print when they've pretty much moved to the Devil Rays look. Same grades as the Brewers: B for the shirt, B+ for the hat.
