Every sport sells its biggest games to TV, but the networks do not pick them the same way. In the NFL, the league picks and the networks lobby. In college football, networks draft their games almost like a fantasy league, 12 days out. In the Premier League, UK broadcasters set the kickoff times and American viewers get whatever lands at 7:30 a.m.
Here is how prime-time and national TV games get picked in every major sport in 2026, who makes the call, how flexible each schedule is, and, because this is a uniform site, how the TV window changes what teams wear.
The Short Version
| Sport | Who Picks | Main National Partners | How Flexible |
|---|---|---|---|
| NFL | The league, after network input | NBC, ESPN/ABC, Prime Video, Netflix, CBS, FOX | Very: published flex rules for Sunday, Monday and Thursday nights |
| NBA | The league, built with its partners in summer | ESPN/ABC, NBC/Peacock, Prime Video | Some: a flex system since 2025-26, no published notice rule |
| MLB | League and partners, set before the season | NBC/Peacock, FOX, TBS, ESPN, Apple, Netflix | Low: NBC's 2026 schedule was published with set matchups |
| NHL | League and partners, set before the season | TNT, ESPN/ABC | Low: no public flex rule |
| College football | The networks, in a draft order set by contract | ESPN/ABC, FOX, CBS, NBC | Weekly: picks 12 days out, some held to 6 days |
| Premier League (US) | The league moves fixtures for UK TV picks | NBC, USA Network, Peacock | Kickoffs move in monthly batches |
NFL: The League Picks, the Networks Lobby
We covered this one in full in how the NFL picks its prime-time games. The short version:
- The NFL builds the schedule in-house. Mike North, the league's vice president of broadcast planning, is the face of it. Networks send wish lists and lobby, but the league makes the call and the Commissioner signs off.
- Every game is essentially a free agent. Under the current deals, any game can land on any partner.
- Flex rules are written down. Sunday Night Football can flex up to twice in Weeks 5-10 and in any week from 11 to 17. Monday Night Football can flex in Weeks 12-17. Thursday Night Football can flex at most twice in Weeks 13-17, generally with 21 days' notice.
- Week 18 is set last, after Week 17 ends, with the Sunday night finale going to the game with the biggest playoff stakes.
- Stars and markets win. In 2026 the Rams got seven prime-time games and the Chiefs got six. The Jets, Titans, Dolphins, Cardinals and Raiders got none. Full counts are in our NFL prime-time games by team.
What Prime Time Does to NFL Uniforms
Prime time is where NFL teams stage their best looks.
- Color Rush was born on Thursday night. It started as a limited Thursday Night Football trial in 2015 and expanded to all 32 teams in 2016. The pitch was that night games should look different. We think the head-to-toe single color mostly did not work, and we explain why in why monochrome NFL uniforms look bad.
- Seattle saves royal blue for the lights. The Seahawks' royal blue throwback gets three games in 2026, all in prime time: Week 6 at Denver on Thursday night (already worn), Sunday, October 25 against the Chiefs on Sunday Night Football, and Monday, December 7 against the Cowboys. Every date is in our Seahawks uniform schedule.
- Cleveland used its only home night game for Alpha Dawg. The Browns picked the all-brown Alpha Dawg set against the Steelers on Thursday, October 1, their only home prime-time date of the season.
- Not every alternate is a night uniform. Detroit's black alternate, often worn in prime time in recent seasons, is confirmed for this Sunday's 4:25 p.m. Eastern game against Green Bay on FOX. See our Lions uniform schedule.
Flex moves can shift these plans, so we log every change in our NFL uniform schedule.
NBA: Three New Partners and a Night for Each
The 2025-26 season started the NBA's 11-year, $76 billion deals with ESPN/ABC, NBC/Peacock and Amazon Prime Video, which replaced TNT. The league says the 2026-27 national schedule generally looks like this:
- Monday: Peacock NBA Monday (started October 26)
- Tuesday: Coast 2 Coast Tuesday on NBC/Peacock, usually two games
- Wednesday: ESPN doubleheaders all season
- Thursday: Prime Video doubleheaders starting in January
- Friday: Prime Video, plus select ESPN doubleheaders from January
- Saturday: NBA Saturday Primetime on ABC (returns December 12), with Prime Video afternoon games from February
- Sunday: ABC afternoon showcases in February and March, and Sunday Night Basketball on NBC, which returns January 24, 2027 with Thunder at Warriors
How NBA National Games Are Picked
The NBA builds its national TV schedule with its partners each summer, between free agency and the August schedule release. Tentpole dates go first: opening night, Christmas Day and the NBA Cup. The 2026-27 schedule came out August 13. Opening night was October 20, an NBC tripleheader.
Stars decide the rest. The Knicks, 76ers, Spurs and Lakers have 34 national games each this season, per Yahoo Sports. The Nets, Bucks, Kings, Grizzlies and Pelicans have two, the league minimum.
NBA Flex Scheduling
Yes, the NBA flexes now. NBC said in December 2025 that the league "now uses a Flex Scheduling system to move certain games into primetime national viewing," modeled on the NFL. That month, Timberwolves vs. Suns replaced a Peacock doubleheader of Kings/Pacers and Spurs/Pelicans, which went to local TV only. The NBA has not published a notice period or a limit on flexes.
The NBA Cup and Christmas
- NBA Cup group play is 60 games on "Cup Nights": Fridays from October 30 through November 27, plus Tuesday, November 24 and Wednesday, November 25. Prime Video has five Friday doubleheaders, NBC has two games on November 24 and ESPN has three on November 25.
- The knockout rounds are all on Prime Video: quarterfinals December 4 and 5, semifinals December 8 and/or 9, and the final on Friday, December 11 at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
- Two games per team are left blank. The schedule sets dates and opponents for 80 of 82 games. The last two are filled in from Cup results.
- Christmas Day has five games on ABC/ESPN for the 19th straight year: Spurs at Knicks (noon Eastern), Heat at Celtics, 76ers at Lakers, Thunder at Timberwolves and Nuggets at Warriors.
What Prime Time Does to NBA Uniforms
- The Cup has its own look. Every Cup game is played on a painted court, and teams wear their Statement Edition uniforms in every Cup game, per NBC Sports. We graded all 30 floors in our NBA Cup courts ranking.
- Christmas jerseys are a memory. The adidas Christmas Day jerseys ran from 2012 to 2016. A 2026 leak billed as Christmas jerseys turned out to be Nike's new Specter Edition. All of this season's sets are in our NBA uniforms hub.
- Contrast still matters on national TV. Networks care that the two teams read clearly on camera, as we explain in who decides which uniforms teams wear.
MLB: Sunday Night Baseball Moved to NBC
MLB announced new three-year national deals (2026 through 2028) with NBC, ESPN and Netflix on November 19, 2025. Here is who has what in 2026:
- NBC and Peacock: Sunday Night Baseball, which ESPN gave up, plus the entire Wild Card round. NBC's 2026 package has 27 prime-time games, including the only prime-time game on Opening Day (Dodgers vs. Diamondbacks, March 26) and Labor Day (Cardinals at Giants). Peacock also has MLB Sunday Leadoff, 18 early-afternoon games.
- Netflix: Opening Night, the Home Run Derby and the Field of Dreams Game.
- ESPN: a national midweek package and the right to sell MLB.TV.
- Apple TV: Friday Night Baseball, two games every Friday, through 2028.
- FOX and TBS: FOX has Saturday night Baseball Night in America, and TBS has Tuesday games.
How Flexible Is MLB?
Not very. NBC published its 2026 Sunday night slate with set matchups all the way through September, and the release had no flex language. We could not find a published flex rule for NBC's package. Baseball's long schedule means the national windows are mostly set before Opening Day.
What Prime Time Does to MLB Uniforms
Baseball's biggest TV showcase this season was a uniform event. The Field of Dreams Game streamed on Netflix on Thursday, August 13, with the Phillies in a gray road look based on their 1939-41 uniforms and the Twins in 1961-inspired pinstripes. Our Field of Dreams 2026 guide has the full look. For how each network presents the games, see our national MLB scorebugs ranking.
NHL: TNT Wednesdays, ESPN and ABC Saturdays
The NHL's US deals with ESPN and Turner (TNT) are both seven-year agreements that began in 2021-22. The Stanley Cup Final rotates: ABC has it in four of the seven years and TNT has it in three. TNT has the 2027 Final.
For 2026-27, per Awful Announcing:
- TNT has 72 regular-season games, with Wednesday night games all season, plus Tuesdays from November 10 to December 22 and Sunday afternoons late in the year.
- ESPN's group has 100 games across ABC, ESPN, ESPN+, Disney+ and Hulu. ESPN had Tuesday nights in October, starting with an opening-night tripleheader on September 29.
- ABC starts January 16 with Bruins at Rangers, then has Saturday games from February 20 through March 20.
The national schedule is set before the season. We found no public NHL flex rule, so the games you see announced in the summer are mostly the games you get.
What Prime Time Does to NHL Uniforms
The NHL builds its national TV showcases around one-off sweaters:
- The Heritage Classic is this Sunday, October 25, at 7 p.m. Eastern on TNT. The Jets wear a white 1980s-style throwback and the Canadiens wear a red sweater with "Les Habitants" on it. Our grades are in 2026 Heritage Classic jerseys.
- The Winter Classic airs on TNT. This season it is the Utah Mammoth against the Avalanche on New Year's Eve at Rice-Eccles Stadium. See our Winter Classic logo history.
- The Stadium Series gets prime time on ABC during its February and March Saturday run.
College Football: Networks Draft Their Games
College football is the opposite of the NFL. The conferences sell the games, and the networks choose them week by week.
The 12-Day and 6-Day Rules
- Early weeks are set in late spring. The first few weeks of kickoff times are mostly set in late May. In 2026, FOX, CBS and NBC announced their early Big Ten games in late May.
- Most games are picked 12 days out. The rest are announced on the Monday 12 days before the game.
- Some picks are held to 6 days. When one week's results could change the next week's stakes, networks can hold games and announce them on the Sunday before. Each conference can only do this a handful of times a season.
Who Picks First
In 2024, Sports Media Watch laid out how the draft works:
- Big Ten: FOX, CBS and NBC draft which weeks they pick first, in an order set by contract. FOX had the first three picks. In a normal week, FOX takes noon, CBS takes 3:30 p.m. and NBC takes 7:30 p.m. Eastern. Leftovers go to FS1, Peacock and Big Ten Network.
- SEC: ESPN owns every game, so it can put the biggest one wherever it wants, on ABC or ESPN. The 3:30 p.m. window is contractually kept for an SEC game.
- Big 12: FOX and ESPN use a similar draft.
- ACC: ESPN holds the rights, with The CW taking a game somewhere in the order.
There are also hard limits. Most contracts bar kickoffs before 11 a.m. local time. LSU is a contractual favorite for night home games. Arizona and Arizona State host only night games in September because of the heat. And most Big Ten schools in the Eastern and Central time zones refuse night games after Daylight Saving Time ends.
The 2026 Saturday Windows
- FOX: a Friday night game, then Big Noon Kickoff (the pregame show) at 10 a.m. Eastern and Big Noon Saturday at noon. FOX has Ohio State at Michigan on November 28 at noon and the Big Ten Championship.
- CBS: 14 Big Ten games in the 3:30 p.m. Eastern window.
- NBC: Big Ten Saturday Night at 7:30 p.m. Eastern, which opened with Western Michigan at Michigan on September 5.
- ABC and ESPN: SEC, ACC and Big 12 games across the day, including Saturday Night Football on ABC.
What Prime Time Does to College Uniforms
Night games are when schools go dark. This season Nebraska, Washington and Louisville all released black alternates within about 30 hours, all chasing the same night-game atmosphere. That is why a 12-day TV pick matters for uniforms: a school often cannot plan a blackout until it knows it has the night window. We ranked them in college football blackout uniforms.
Premier League: UK TV Sets the Clock
In the US, NBCUniversal has all 380 Premier League matches a season in a six-year deal that runs through the 2027-28 season, reported at about $2.7 billion. Matches air on NBC, USA Network and Peacock.
But NBC does not set the kickoff times. The Premier League moves fixtures after UK broadcasters Sky Sports and TNT Sports make their live picks, and it announces the changes in batches. That is why US fans wake up early. The usual Saturday windows are:
- 7:30 a.m. Eastern (usually USA Network)
- 10 a.m. Eastern (several matches across USA Network and Peacock)
- 12:30 p.m. Eastern (the late match, often on NBC)
For kits, the opponent matters more than the TV slot: clubs choose what to wear to avoid a color clash.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who decides which games are in prime time?
It depends on the sport. The NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL leagues set their national schedules with their TV partners. In college football, the networks pick games week by week in a draft order set by contract.
Do TV networks pick their own NFL games?
Not directly. Networks lobby and send wish lists, but the NFL makes the final call on every game and every flex.
What is flex scheduling?
It lets a league move a better game into a national or prime-time window during the season. The NFL has the most detailed rules. The NBA has had a flex system since 2025-26.
Does the NBA have flex scheduling?
Yes. NBC said in December 2025 that the NBA now uses a flex system, modeled on the NFL, to move certain games into national prime time. The league has not published a notice period.
What channel is NBA on each night in 2026-27?
Generally Peacock on Monday, NBC/Peacock on Tuesday, ESPN on Wednesday, Prime Video on Thursday and Friday, ABC on Saturday night and NBC on Sunday night once Sunday Night Basketball returns January 24, 2027.
Which NBA teams have the most national TV games in 2026-27?
The Knicks, 76ers, Spurs and Lakers, with 34 each, per Yahoo Sports. Five teams have the minimum of two.
When is the 2026 NBA Cup final?
Friday, December 11, 2026, at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, on Prime Video.
What uniforms do NBA teams wear in NBA Cup games?
Their Statement Edition uniforms, on painted Cup courts, per NBC Sports.
What channel is Sunday Night Baseball on in 2026?
NBC and Peacock. NBC took over the package from ESPN in 2026, along with the Wild Card round.
Is MLB on Netflix?
Yes. In 2026 Netflix has Opening Night, the Home Run Derby and the Field of Dreams Game.
Is Friday Night Baseball still on Apple TV?
Yes. Apple kept Friday Night Baseball, two games every Friday, for 2026 through 2028.
What channel is the NHL on?
TNT and the ESPN family (ESPN, ABC, ESPN+, Disney+ and Hulu). TNT has Wednesday nights. ABC has Saturday games starting in January.
Who has the 2027 Stanley Cup Final?
TNT. The Final rotates between ABC and TNT.
How are college football TV times picked?
Most are announced on the Monday 12 days before the game. Networks can hold some games and announce them six days out, on the Sunday before, a handful of times per conference each season.
What is a six-day hold in college football?
A network option to wait until the Sunday before a game to set its time and channel, used when that week's results could change the stakes.
What is Big Noon Kickoff?
FOX's college football pregame show, at 10 a.m. Eastern on Saturdays. The game that follows at noon is Big Noon Saturday.
Why are Premier League games so early in the US?
Kickoff times are set for UK television. A 12:30 p.m. UK kickoff is 7:30 a.m. Eastern.
Why do teams wear special uniforms in prime time?
Night and national games bring the biggest audiences, so teams save their best alternates and throwbacks for them. The Seahawks' royal blue throwback is in prime time all three times this season.
The Bottom Line
Of the major US leagues, the NFL publishes the most detailed prime-time flex rules, and it still keeps the final say. The NBA has started flexing, baseball and hockey mostly lock in before the season, college football lets the networks draft, and the Premier League's US kickoff times are set for UK TV. For uniforms, the rule is the same everywhere: the bigger the window, the better the look.
