The 10 Most Overrated Uniforms in Sports Right Now (2026), Ranked: Yes, the Yankees Pinstripes Are No. 1

By ColorWay Sports Staff·

Yesterday we ranked the 10 worst uniforms in sports. Today is harder, and it is going to make more people angry. These are the most overrated uniforms in sports right now: the looks everybody calls perfect, iconic or untouchable, that we do not think live up to the hype.

The rules: uniforms teams are wearing in 2026, across the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL and one college program. Nothing from the worst list. Overrated does not mean bad. Some of these grade well. They are ranked by the gap between the reputation and the grade we have actually given them in our own team rankings, and where a uniform's reputation is bigger, the gap is bigger.

That is how the most famous uniform in American sports ends up at No. 1. We are counting down from 10. Tell us who we got wrong.

10. Philadelphia Flyers Orange Home B

Why people love it: the Flying P is a perfect logo, and burnt orange belongs to Philadelphia the way nothing else in hockey belongs to anyone.

Why it is overrated: the logo and the color are doing all the work. The 2023 update went back to the 1970s shape, and it is cleaner than what came before, but the nameplate sits in a contrasting color that slices the back of the sweater in half. And the closet is quiet: the black alternate did not come out once last season, and the 60th season has arrived without a throwback to mark it so far. A great logo on a good sweater is a B, which is where we had the Flyers in our NHL jersey rankings. Every Flyers game this season.

9. Oregon Origin of Speed B

Why people love it: Oregon is the uniform school, and a new Ducks reveal gets more attention than most teams' rebrands. The Hayward Field story behind this one is a good one.

Why it is overrated: the reveal photos are lit to glow. A football field is not. The electric green numbers and the Green Strike speed streaks are exactly what Oregon should be doing, but they sit on a Night Forest base so dark it reads close to black on a broadcast, so the best part of the design fights the worst part. The same streaks on a white jersey would have been an A. By Oregon's own standard, "good" is not good enough. Oregon wore it against UCLA on October 10 and lost 17-15. The full Origin of Speed breakdown.

8. Seattle Kraken Abyss Awakens Third B

Why people love it: the S with the tentacle and the red eye is the best logo created for a new team this century, and a glow-in-the-dark crest outline is the kind of detail fans screenshot.

Why it is overrated: a black third for a team whose home sweater is already deep sea blue. Seattle now owns two very dark sweaters and only one with any light in it, and the details that make the Abyss fun up close, the glowing crest outline, the sonar-ping sleeve stripes and the arena coordinates in the collar, disappear from the stands. The Kraken's B in our NHL jersey rankings is the closet getting darker. Every Kraken game this season.

7. Boston Celtics B

Why people love it: 18 banners, the shamrock, and green and white that have barely moved in generations. "Timeless" is the word people use.

Why it is overrated: timeless and safe are not the same thing. The Celtics have the most disciplined palette in the NBA and also the narrowest, and the closet adds almost nothing to the white and the green shown here: a black CELTICS Statement, a black Specter Edition with a shamrock, and a reported City Edition that is nearly a twin of the green. Five jerseys, two ideas. That is why the Celtics landed 18th, at a B, in our NBA uniform closets ranking, behind the Bulls, Heat and Pacers. Every Celtics game this season.

6. San Diego Padres Brown Alternate B

Why people love it: nobody else in baseball owns brown. Uniform fans campaigned for brown and gold for years, and the Padres finally brought it back. Brown has become a whole personality in San Diego.

Why it is overrated: we love the idea. The jersey does not cash it in. Gold lettering on dark brown is lower contrast than it looks in a studio photo, and with sand pants, as here, the whole uniform is three earth tones with nothing bright to anchor it. From distance the chest goes flat. It is handsome rather than a knockout, and it is not even the best jersey in its own closet: the camouflage alternate grades higher. Every Padres jersey, ranked.

5. Boston Red Sox Yellow City Connect C

Why people love it: the yellow and blue come straight from the Boston Marathon, a day the city owns, and the meaning behind it is real. It earns more goodwill than anything else in the Red Sox closet outside the classics.

Why it is overrated: as a gesture, it is great. As a baseball uniform, it is a lot of yellow. Boston is red and navy, and the marathon palette shares nothing with it, so on the days it comes out it looks like another team borrowed Fenway for the afternoon. This would be perfect as a patch or a one-day special. In regular rotation, it wears thin, which is why we gave it a C. Every Red Sox jersey, ranked.

4. Dallas Cowboys Navy Jersey B-

Why people love it: it is America's Team, the star is one of the most famous marks in sports, and the navy jersey is the one on the posters and in the store windows.

Why it is overrated: it is where the Cowboys' blues stop working together. The Cowboys build their best uniform, the white, around the metallic silver-blue pant, our favorite pant in the NFL. The navy jersey drops it for a flatter silver that matches nothing in particular, and the gray and white sleeve stripe that pops on white loses its contrast on navy. From the upper deck it reads as a navy block with numbers. Dallas still ranks fifth in our NFL uniform grades because the white and the Thanksgiving Classic are great. The famous dark jersey is a B-. It comes out three times this season, all on the road. Every Cowboys jersey, ranked.

3. Vegas Golden Knights Gold Home C-

Why people love it: it belongs to a team that reached the Stanley Cup Final in its first season and won the Cup in 2023, and gold is the most Vegas color there is.

Why it is overrated: metallic gold never looks the same twice. Under some arena lights it washes out to mustard, under others it turns brassy, and the black, steel grey and red striping is crowded on top of it. Vegas had one of the best expansion looks in decades in the original steel grey, and that sweater is reported to be leaving the regular rotation this season. The gold has been the home sweater since 2022-23, and without the grey behind it, Vegas has our second-lowest closet in the league, a C-, ahead of only Florida in our NHL jersey rankings. Every Golden Knights game this season.

2. Las Vegas Raiders Black Home B

Why people love it: silver and black. The shield and swords. Nobody in football has a stronger identity, and nobody's fans dress the part like Raider Nation.

Why it is overrated: the identity is an A. The jersey is not. Black with white numbers gives the silver almost no room above the waist, so at distance the uniform reads as a dark block with silver at the top and bottom. The road white, where black numbers finally give the silver something to sit next to, is the better uniform, and it is the one most of the franchise's best-known photos were taken in. The Raiders sit 22nd in our NFL uniform grades. Silver and black is untouchable in theory. In practice, the reputation is doing a lot of the work. Every Raiders jersey, ranked.

1. New York Yankees Home Pinstripes A

Why people love it: it is the most iconic uniform in American sports. Pinstripes, the interlocking NY, no names on the back, a century of championships, and a team that refuses to add anything.

Why it is overrated: we gave it an A, and we stand by the A. What we do not buy is "the greatest uniform ever." Take away the history and here is what is left: thin navy pinstripes that vanish from the upper deck, a small NY over the heart, and one color. Its genius is subtraction, and subtraction has a ceiling. When we graded the jersey and not the legacy, it finished 17th in our best MLB uniforms of 2026. The Cubs do home pinstripes better at No. 3, with red and royal doing work the Yankees' navy never does. The Dodgers' home white is No. 1. Even the Mets' black alternate is No. 4. Sixteen baseball uniforms beat the most famous one in sports. No uniform anywhere has a bigger gap between how it is talked about and how it ranks. Every Yankees jersey, ranked.

What "Overrated" Means Here

None of these are bad uniforms. The bad ones are on our worst uniforms in sports list, and nothing from that list appears here. Overrated is a different problem: a famous logo, a beloved color or a great story covering for a jersey that is merely good. The pattern is the same across the leagues. The Yankees, Raiders and Celtics are carried by history. The Padres, Red Sox and Kraken are carried by a color or concept everyone loves. Vegas, Oregon and the Cowboys' navy are carried by the brand. Strip the reputation off, grade what is actually on the field, and every one of them comes back lower than the internet says it should.

No. They are an A, and they are on this list because they are called the greatest uniform ever, not because they are bad. Our full take is in every Yankees jersey, ranked.

Is the Raiders uniform overrated?

The streaks are great. The Night Forest base is so dark that they fight each other on TV, and we think the same design on white would have been better. We graded it a B in our Origin of Speed breakdown.

What is the difference between this list and the worst uniforms list?

The worst uniforms in sports are the lowest grades we have given, like the Vikings Rivalries uniform at an F. This list is about the gap between reputation and grade. A uniform can be good and still be overrated.

How did you grade these uniforms?

Every grade here comes from a team ranking or league ranking we have already published on ColorWay Sports, judged on design, color, fit with the team's identity and how it reads from the stands and on TV. We did not change any grade for this list.

The Bottom Line

The most overrated uniforms in sports are not ugly. They are famous, and fame covers a lot. The Yankees pinstripes are an A that gets talked about like an A+, and that gap is the biggest in sports. Think your team does not belong here? That is the point. Tell us.
