SMU Uniform Schedule 2026: Every Jersey and When the Mustangs Wear It

SMU has one helmet, three jersey colors, and a habit of wearing white pants with all of them. This is the full SMU 2026 uniform schedule: the blue home set, the all-white icy whites that opened the season at Florida State, the red alternate that came out for Missouri State, the black one still sitting in the closet, and a week-by-week outlook for all twelve games. We update this page as each combination is confirmed.

The SMU 2026 Uniform Sets

The white helmet with the red Peruna is the anchor of the whole thing, and it has been since 2008, when SMU walked away from the blue shells it had worn since 2003 and went back to the look of the mid-1980s Pony Express teams. Everything since has been built around that one decision. There is no second helmet, no chrome, no matte black shell. SMU changes the jersey and leaves the head alone.

The season opened at Florida State with the set SMU calls the icy whites, an all-white combination the program has been running since 2024.

For the Labor Day night trip to Tallahassee the announcement was three cold-face emojis and four photos of the jersey hanging in a road locker, red SMU wordmark, red Peruna at the collar, ACC patch on the shoulder.

Florida State answered with garnet over gold, which made it one of the better color matchups of Week 1 and one of the strangest nights, since the game was interrupted by a power outage at Doak Campbell Stadium.

One more 2026 change is worth flagging even though it is not on the jersey: SMU sold the on-field logo at Gerald J. Ford Stadium to an insurance sponsor over the summer, so the look of the home broadcasts changed before the uniforms did.

The Full SMU 2026 Uniform Schedule, Week by Week

September 7 at Florida State. ★ Confirmed from the broadcast: white helmet, white jersey, white pants, the icy whites, on Labor Day night in Tallahassee. SMU won 27-24 in a game that was stopped by a power outage at Doak Campbell Stadium. Florida State hosted in gold helmets, garnet jerseys and gold pants, which we cover on the Florida State 2026 uniform schedule.

September 12 vs. UC Davis. ★ Confirmed from the broadcast: white helmet with the red facemask, blue jersey, white pants, the standard home look for a 3 p.m. Central home opener. SMU won 56-10. The stands were the white part of the equation: the school ran a White Out and handed crowns to the first 2,000 students for Kevin Jennings' Heisman campaign.

September 19 at Louisville. ★ Confirmed from the broadcast: white helmet, white jersey, white pants, all white for the first ACC road game. Louisville wore the white helmet with a red jersey and white pants and won 41-31, so the clean red-on-white matchup arrived as expected. We track the other side on the Louisville 2026 uniform schedule.

September 26 vs. Missouri State. ★ Confirmed by SMU and from the broadcast: white helmet, red jersey, red pants, posted as "Week 4 thREDs." We had blue down. It was Family Weekend and the start of a four-game homestand. Missouri State wore a white helmet, white jersey and maroon pants and led 10-0 after a pick-six, but Kevin Jennings went 33 of 39 for 464 yards and three touchdowns to become SMU's career passing leader, and SMU won 34-24 to move to 3-1.

October 3 vs. Boston College, noon ET on The CW. ★ Confirmed by SMU: white helmet, blue jersey, white pants, posted with the line "Nothing beats the classic look." That settles the black question: Boston College was the opponent SMU picked for its all black set the last time the two met in Dallas in 2024, but for the 2026 ACC home opener, a Blue theme day, the Mustangs went with the base home set. The white helmet keeps its red facemask, and it is the same combination SMU wore against UC Davis on September 12. The broadcast matched it: white helmet with the red facemask, blue jersey, white pants. Boston College wore the gold helmet and white jersey. In a soggy defensive game, Marques White had three of SMU's five sacks, Kevin Jennings threw two touchdown passes and ran for a third, and SMU won 25-16 to move to 4-1. The Eagles' side is on our Boston College 2026 uniform schedule.

October 10. Bye.

October 17 vs. Virginia, noon ET on The CW. ★ Confirmed by SMU: the classic look, white helmet, blue jersey, white pants. This is the Salute to Service game and the Hall of Fame game, with a Stripe Out in the stands. SMU has aimed the blackout at its Salute to Service date before, but not this year. Virginia is confirmed in all white, white helmet, white jersey and white pants. Every look this week is in our Week 7 uniform guide.

October 24 vs. Cal. Blue or red. This is the one home date where SMU is pointing its own fans at a color other than blue or white: Fan Appreciation Day comes with a "wear red" instruction, which puts the red jersey back in play after its debut against Missouri State. Cal will be in white.

October 31 at Syracuse. White expected. Halloween in the dome, and orange against the icy whites is one of the better looking games on the SMU calendar. See the Syracuse 2026 uniform schedule.

November 6 vs. Virginia Tech. Blue expected. A Friday night ACC game at 6 p.m. Central on ESPN, built around Club Takeaway Night, with light-up sticks for the first 5,000 students. More on the visitor at the Virginia Tech 2026 uniform schedule.

November 14 vs. Wake Forest. Blue expected. Homecoming and Senior Day, and the last home game of the season.

November 21 at Notre Dame. White expected. Prime time on NBC in South Bend, with Notre Dame in navy, which is as good a stage as the icy whites are going to get this year. See the Notre Dame 2026 uniform schedule.

November 28 at Stanford. White expected. Regular season finale on the West Coast.

The Bottom Line

Five games in, SMU has used the blue, white and red jerseys and the only helmet it owns, which is the whole story of this uniform program: the white shell with the red Peruna never leaves, and the variable is what goes under it. Blue at home, icy whites on the road, and alternates that need a reason to come out. The red already did, with red pants for Family Weekend against Missouri State, and it has another natural landing spot on October 24, when the school is asking the crowd to wear red. The black needs a night game, and SMU passed on it for Boston College and again for the Salute to Service date against Virginia, which gets the classic blue set. The grid above has every date, and we fill in the stars as each uniform is confirmed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What jersey is SMU wearing this week?

SMU wore the classic look against Boston College on Saturday, October 3: white helmet with the red facemask, blue jersey and white pants, confirmed from the broadcast, in a 25-16 win that moved the Mustangs to 4-1. The week before, they wore red over red in a 34-24 win over Missouri State. SMU is off on October 10, then hosts Virginia on October 17 in the classic look, white helmet, blue jersey and white pants, confirmed by the team for the Salute to Service and Hall of Fame game. The week-by-week grid above lists every game with the expected set, and we update it as combinations are confirmed.

What are SMU's football uniforms for 2026?

One white helmet with the red Peruna on both sides, a red center stripe flanked by blue and MUSTANGS on the rear bumper. Under it: a blue home jersey with white numerals outlined in red, a white jersey with light blue numerals and a red SMU wordmark, and red and black alternates. White pants go with everything.

What are SMU's icy whites?

That is SMU's own name for the all-white combination, white helmet, white jersey and white pants, which the program introduced in 2024 and wore for the 2026 opener at Florida State. The white version also swaps the red facemask for a white one, which is what makes the look read as one solid piece rather than a white jersey with a red trim.

Will SMU wear red or black in 2026?

The red already has: SMU wore the red jersey and red pants against Missouri State on September 26. October 24 against Cal is the date to watch for it again, because SMU has told fans to wear red for Fan Appreciation Day. The black has not been announced. The all-black set has appeared roughly once a year since 2022 and tends to show up for a night game. It did not come out for Boston College on October 3 or for the Salute to Service game against Virginia on October 17, where SMU confirmed the classic blue look.

Why does ESPN list the Virginia Tech game on November 7?

ESPN's schedule feed runs on UTC. A 6 p.m. Central kickoff on Friday, November 6 is already Saturday in London, so the feed shows a November 7 date. The Missouri State game on September 26 has the same one-day shift for the same reason. Both are correct in Dallas as listed in our grid.

How many games does SMU play in 2026?

Twelve regular season games: seven at Gerald J. Ford Stadium and five on the road, with a bye on October 10. Nine of them are ACC games, plus a home game against UC Davis, a home game against Missouri State and a trip to Notre Dame. The full schedule with expected uniforms is in the grid above.
