The 2026 Smokey Grey Is a Neyland Tribute

Tennessee revealed this year's Smokey Grey on August 20, and it is the best one the series has produced in a while. The theme is General Robert Neyland, and the timing is the reason: 2026 is one hundred years since Neyland's first season as Tennessee's head coach in 1926.

The details are where it earns the tribute:

• Neyland's signature in script across the back helmet bumper.
• A white star on the shell, the old Tennessee helmet marking.
• Ayres Hall printed across the shoulder yokes in tonal grey line art, flags and all, so it reads as texture from the stands and as architecture up close.
• The vintage interlocking UT monogram in raised orange on the collar and the sleeves.
• Orange numbers with a white outline, arched TENNESSEE on the back, and cream pants with an orange, cream and grey stripe.

This is also the first Smokey Grey of the adidas era. Tennessee left Nike this year, and the Smokey Grey Series, which started back in 2013, carries over into the new deal with a different design each season.

It debuts October 3 against Auburn at Neyland Stadium. One game, as always with this series.

Grey jerseys are not our favorite thing in college football, and that is the ceiling this one runs into. Working against that, this is about as well as the idea gets executed. The Ayres Hall print on the sleeves is the best part of the set, a real piece of design rather than a pattern for the sake of one, and it rewards a closer look without shouting from the stands. The orange numbers give the jersey the pop it needs, which is the thing most grey sets get wrong when they go tonal and disappear.

The pants are the quietly correct decision. Cream instead of grey keeps this from turning into a single flat block of colorless uniform, and it is the difference between a grey jersey and a grey uniform. Tennessee did the version of this we would ask for. We would just rather have the orange.

The Two Dates That Matter

Most of this schedule answers itself. Orange at home, white away, twelve games, no surprises in either direction. The two that are worth circling are October 3 and October 17, two weeks apart, both at Neyland.

October 3 is the only alternate uniform on the calendar. October 17 is the rarer thing: a road team showing up in color, which almost never happens in this sport and has not happened in this rivalry in more than fifty years. Back to back home dates where the field looks different than it normally does.
