The Ireland Uniform Is the Best Thing TCU Has Made in Years

TCU revealed the set on June 15, more than two months before kickoff, which tells you how much the program thinks of it.

The jersey is all black, and the details are where it earns the attention:

The helmet is the detail almost nobody has framed properly. TCU's 2011 Rose Bowl helmet carried a horned frog with a rose in its mouth, from the season the Frogs went 13-0 and beat Wisconsin in Pasadena. For Ireland, the rose has been replaced with a four-leaf clover.

That is a very small change carrying a lot of weight. It ties the biggest win in modern program history to the biggest stage the program has been given since, and it does it without a shamrock-covered novelty jersey. A lesser version of this uniform puts the clover on the chest. TCU put it in the frog's mouth and left the rest alone.

The black base is loosely descended from TCU's 2010 Pro Combat set, which dates the reference nicely: 2010 and 2011 were the two seasons this program was genuinely great.

TCU spent its one big uniform swing of the year on the game with the largest audience, which is the correct way to use it. Carolina answered with a throwback, so the first game of the season is a costume against a history lesson. The Frog Horn black would be a good alternate on its own.
